Currently in NY with Edge 1030 Plus and I can't see detailed maps in France.

I purchased my Edge 1030 Plus In the USA and I can't see the detail on the European (France specifically) maps. Are they not loading because my GPS coordinates are too far away (in the US at the moment)? I've checked and they are enabled and I've also gone into Garmin Express and reloaded European maps to my Edge 1030 Plus.

I will be heading to France soon for a small vacation and I will be cycling over there.

I've also tried to download the OSM France map but that site seems to be having issues.  They quoted 182 days for the map to be ready.

Thank yo in advance!

  • To see European map if you are located in NY:

    -enable European maps
-goto map screen on your Edge (you see NY location an map)
-tap onto the hand middle top screen
-now zoom out as far as possible
-shift basic map over to Europe - France
-zoom in as far as possible

If the European map is loaded and working, you should see now details in France.

You also can load a course in France first and find it on screen by doing the described steps.

As soon you tap „return arrow“ on the map (left bottom) you will find yourself in NY again.

Use https://extract.bbbike.org instead (and do not use UNICODE).

(The http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ site isn't being maintained. It's been kind-of broken for a while.)

  • Again and again interesting guys here in the forum. First ask, but then immediately forgotten. Joy

  • I have done the above and there is no detail in Europe.  With Garmin Connect, i've looked at the maps that i have loaded and it indicates Routable Maps in USA and Routable Maps in Europe.  However, when i hover over the Routable Europe, a window pops up and indicates not enough room for these maps.

  • I've downloaded a section of France using extract.bbbike... and on the 1030 plus road profile, it shows "enabled - france osm/latin1 BBBike.org 12 aug, 2021" but when I zoom in on the map i see absolutely no detail.

  • I've downloaded your bbbike map zip file „france“, renamed the map to france_bbb.img, copied it to my Edge 1030+ device.
Then I activated/enabled the map - see picture
(Also activated is my standard map "Alps" which does not include France)

-Rotated North up for better orientation, zoomed out into the basemap - level 50 km
-Moved basemap over to France - set region Bordeaux in center
-Moved in to 200 m level - voila: here are Bordeaux details

  • Thanks! Saved me time!

I have the US, Europe (NW and SE), Central America, and Trail Forks maps installed on my 1030+. I also have the various DEM and Geocode maps installed.

Windows shows that 18.7 GB is used and 10.1 GB is free.

You should have enough space. I wonder if you have some old half-downloaded maps.

  • Good news.  I've made it to France and I have the detailed local maps which I've used more than once.  I'm not sure what the problem was but perhaps when I panned over to Frrance, it took longer for the local maps to load than the time that I gave it.  Regardless,  Thank you for help and suggestions!
