A couple of questions.

Hi, I recently purchased a 1030 plus, now I have a couple of questions. First of all, I want to know if there is a setting I can enable for when I push the lap button It automatically switches to my own lap screen that I've set up. I had this function on my wahoo element bolt and I couldn't find it anywhere on the Garmin.

Second, i have an issue with navigation I think? it shows two lines instead of 1 to navigate? Is this just the line from the virtual partner ? I've read that you can't disable this? The route itself is from komoot and I can't seem to find a setting there that you can set the pace at (people suggesting that you set it very fast or slow) But I'm not sure if this is the problem can anyone verify ?

Here are some screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/mfjXx1h as you can see next to the water there isn't a road anymore but the Garmin shows there is??? Is it the virtual partner? it's very confusing.

  • 1- No, you can't do that. (One reason might be that it would make providing support more difficult. Having the buttons do "one thing" makes it easier to support).

2- The Garmins take your loaded track (the darker line) and calculate a secondary route (the lighter line) by picking the roads on the installed map that the track appears to follow. You should get used to it. It's confusing at first (especially, if you don't understand how the Garmins work).

The second route is enabled by "Turn Guidance" (the thing that provides the big white arrows). You can disable "turn guidance" and just follow the track.

The secondary route is part due to being able to calculate routes on the device itself. (The Wahoo devices used to use a phone to calculate the route.)

  • Okay, thanks for clarifying. If i disable Turn Guidance, will I still get the popup screen to turn when I am on another data screen? cause I really like that feature.

  • The pop-up screen with the big white arrows is from turn guidance.

You’ll get “course points”, which are small black pop-ups (if you have course points enabled and are using fit or tcx files).

You should just get used to the two lines.

  • It would be very nice is the Garmin track could be disabled. Why have two lines in the map? Just confusing....

  • They don't always trace the same path. That's extra information that can be useful.

Generally, if you plan the route using OSM maps, the two are very close.

It's been done this way for a very long time. Not many people complain about it.

It's highly unlikely that Garmin will change it.

  • I am a bit confused. I am always told that if you load a track that the Edge calculates a route (creates a course from it) and eventually avoids roads where cycling is not allowed.

From my experience I have seen different behavior than above. My Edge 1030plus draws a thick white arrow as long as the road where I am not allowed to cycle (in some cases kms long) but it did not deviate the calculated route from the original track. It just told me to turn right into this not allowed road, then navigation stops and as soon as I was back on a road where cycling is allowed it just continuous the navigation.

Is this some kind of setting? I like the behavior I am seeing and would not like my calculated route to take a big detour from the original track.

  • The white arrow should only show up for turns (it’s a turn indicator). If the map is a a low zoom level (zoomed out), the separate white arrows can get drawn together (making one long white arrow). The white arrow isn’t an indicator of where you can’t cycle.

The point of using a course is to indicate what roads you want to use. The Edge should use the roads you chose (rather than choosing other roads).

If you are getting a large detour, something else is the reason.  It’s possible that the map is not showing that roads connect. If there’s a disconnect, the Edges won’t route across it.

  • So what is the expected behavior when I create a track that goes through a oneway road in wrong direction?

Is it expected that the Edge creates a course that routes around it or just routes into this oneway road. My experience is that it is doing the latter.

  •  One way roads appear to be an exception.
