Device gets into a confused state...

I have a Garmin Edge 1030 Plus.  Most of the time, it works perfectly, but once in a while it gets into a confused state.  For example, I would load a FIT file and go on a ride.  At some point during the ride, the device suddenly asks me if I want to save or discard the ride.  I want neither; I just want to continue the ride.  At the top of the screen it says "Press >" to continue the ride, but when I press the ">" button at the bottom of the device, it asks me to do a U-Turn.

In other words, the device gives me three options, neither of which is desirable.

I don't know how the device gets into this state; it's possible that I accidentally touched the screen or a drop of sweat fell on it or whatever.  I don't understand why the device won't let me just continue my ride.

Has anyone experienced this?

  • This issue has still been happening (including today) but I've been paying more attention and it appears what's causing this issue is the activation of Virtual Partner (whatever that is).  Please note that I myself have never intentionally activated or used that feature.  However, today, during my ride the device briefly mentioned something about Virtual Partner and sure enough, the device soon got into that confused state that I mentioned above.

Does anyone know what's going on, and, more importantly, does anyone know how I can permanently disable that Virtual Partner feature?

  • The save/discard ride screen will only show if the start/stop button is pressed. I know of no other situation where it would suddenly appear. Perhaps the way your Garmin is mounted makes it easy to inadvertently press the button.

The Virtual Partner can not be disabled.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I am familiar with the Save/Discard screen and the Start/Stop button at the bottom right of the device, but what does this have to do with the Virtual Partner?  Does pressing the button automatically invoke the Virtual Partner?  I read the owner's manual and there's scarce information about Virtual Partner.  There must be a way to avoid using this feature.  I just want my device to follow the GPX/FIT route that I uploaded, and not bother me with any other feature.
