Navigation

I used my Garmin edge 1030 plus for the first time yesterday. It has Firmware  4.10. I was following a club route which was created in Garmin. It constantly told me I was off course. Bleeping at me to pause the course or re-route. This was very annoying given the cost of the unit. Is there a way of correcting this and turning the bleeping off?

  • Don't blame the device. Rather blame the course file.
If you upload it here (zipped), we could check it.

  • The course looks OK. There are a couple of places where there are odd short U turns, which might cause brief issues.

What you experienced is not normal for the device at all.

  • I concur that this can be very annoying. Sometimes with garmins, it's a trial and error of what settings you like. I have found that I turn off the auto-recalculation of routes/courses. From main screen-  click menu > activity profile > ROAD (whatever you use) > Navigation > Routing >  At the bottom you have course recalculation and route recalculation. I honestly don't know what the difference here is, but someone on the forums explained that course recalculation gets you back on course, route recalculation redoes the whole course for you. I have course recalculation to PROMPT ONLY, and Route recalculation to OFF. So you get a prompt if the device thinks you're off course, but you can ignore it if you know you're on the right one. You can also pause it, and then click play a bit later on the navigation map screen. Before it would recalculate the course and keep beeping at me because I wouldn't go along it's chosen path for me.

  • It didn’t sound like a recalculation issue.

But the OP should try turning it off.

  • As dpawlyk said - the course looks good indeed.

Have you (Steve) checked the activity file?
Would be interesting what the GPS track looks like. We could overlay it to the course track.
If you want - submit the activity fit file.

It's not normal that you got that many offcourse events. Maybe you had a bad GPS reception (which could be seen in the activity file).
