How to upload course from Garmin Base camp to 1030+ device?

I have entered a Audax ride via Strava, Tried exporting the gpx from my Strava on my mac book pro to my 1030+ That directs me to Garmin Base Camp. The route is in Base camp, but it won't allow me to transfer it to my edge 1030+ I have read that I should upload it with ride with gps but I can't that app on my mac book pro. Beginning to regret buying the 1030+, lots of little niggles. No wonder all my mates have gone to Wahoo. Very frustrating.

  • Just copy the .gpx file to the folder ..\Garmin\NewFiles on the 1030+ (the 1030 has to be USB attached in mass storage mode). After detach and startup of the 1030+ the gpx will be imported and converted to a course in .fit format and placed in the ..\Garmin\Courses folder (the NewFiles' folder will be empty now). On the 1030+ you will find the course under 'Courses'.
    By the way... loading a track or route from Garmin Basecamp to the Edge should work without hassles.

    These standard procedures never have to be a reason to dump your 1030+ ...

  • 1- As bikepc01 pointed out, you can just copy the file to the device.

    2- Ridewithgps has a website. You can download routes from the website (you don't need an app). Then, just copy the file.

    3- If the course is on RWGPS, you can pin the route on RWGPS and download it using my IQ app/widget (GRouteLoader) without needing a computer (though you do need Connect running on the phone).

    4- I believe you can sync the strava route to the Garmin Connect website and transfer the route using Garmin Connect on you phone.

    5- You can export the track in BaseCamp as a file and copy the file. (But, as shown above, there are alternatives to BaseCamp.)

    None of this is very hard (though, it might be a bit confusing at first try).

    Stick with the 1030+ (it's a nice device).

    The Wahoo units are fine too (but the Garmins give you more flexibility).

  • Thank you for your time, I will give that a go.

  • Thank you will try that as well.

  • Thanks, not as easy as my old 810 or 10000. I had to duplicate the course & save it in Strave & then drag it across as a gpx file to routes. Device transfer in garmin base camp was way easier. Garmin aren't helping themselves by making things more difficult. Thanks again.

  • What your "workflow" is or what problems you are having isn't really clear.

    You are getting a GPX track file from Strava as far as I understand.

    If so, you can copy the file to the \Garmin\NewFiles folder on 1030+.

    You don't need BaseCamp at all.

    If you want to use BaseCamp, you should be able to load the track file into BaseCamp and send it to the device (this feature of BaseCamp is doing the same thing as just copying the file to \Garmin\NewFiles).

    You should be able to do what you did using the 810 on the 1030/1030+.

    You can use the newer units just like the older units (in nearly all cases).

    ======================

    Sending tracks from BaseCamp (latest version 4.7.3 on Windows) to the 1030+ works (I just tried it).

    I'm not sure if the older versions of BaseCamp could deal with the 1030/1030+.

    I'm not sure what the situation with BaseCamp on the Mac is (maybe, things don't quite work there).

  • Base camp says   Nothing to send. No data of the selected was found so nothing has been to your GPS device. Although I can see the map in detail with the route?

    Its a GPX file? In the end I copied the route that was sent to me in Strava & dragged it into courses. Never had that problem with my old 810 & 1000. I haven't got them now to see if it still works?

  • That's somewhat clearer.

    The issue is with BaseCamp. Are you using the latest version?

    Doing what you described works on Windows.

    Garmin is not actively working on BaseCamp any longer (they stopped like 4 years ago).

    They do appear to try to fix things but that's a minimal effort.

    ==================

    If it's a GPX or TCX file, you really need to copy it to \Garmin\NewFiles (not \Garmin\Courses).

    If it's a FIT file, you should do the same thing (it's the official procedure).

    ==================

    So, you:

    1. Download the file from Strava to your Mac.
    2. Run BaseCamp
    3. Load the file into BaseCamp
    4. Select and click send to device.

    ==================

    You could:

    1. Download the file from Strava to your Mac.
    2. Open the \Garmin\NewFiles folder on the Garmin in Finder.
    3. Copy the file to \Garmin\NewFiles.

    This works on all the Edges (starting with the 800).

    This alternative isn't really any harder than using BaseCamp.

    You don't need BaseCamp.

  • Thank you, I will use that in future. I'll get rid of base camp.
