1030 plus display very dim

I just received a new 1030 plus today. My big problem right now is that the display is so dim (indoors) that I really can just barely read it.

I went to System > Display menu. The menu items for Auto Brightness and Brightness are greyed out and do not respond to touch. Backlight timeout, color mode and screen capture are all functional.

How can I adjust the screen brightness if the controls to do so are greyed out?

You can't compare a sun readable display with an OLED display. Comparing to it, it will be always a little bit dim, but perfectly readable on direct sunlight. It is your choice...

This is an old thread but it came up googling so I'll post on it. This frustrated me a lot as the display can be INSANELY dark on auto mode indoors, but I knew it could be changed. It turns out that if "battery save mode" is on it disables any attempt to change the brightness, if you disable battery save mode, you can change the brightness. A better UI would have been to pop up "can't change brightness if battery save mode on" or something to avoid this frustration, but that is the problem for anyone reading this.
