Work around to install 'Routable Cycle map of Europe' update

Today (2020/12/20) Garmin Express (build 7.2.2.0) started to install a map update for my 'Routable Cycle map of Europe'.

However, the installation could not be completed because the Edge 1030+ (FW build 4.00) would not have enough 'free space' although I have only the  'Routable Cycle map of Europe' installed and no other map.

Garmin Express suggested to delete any IQ App but that did not make the update pass.

So, I relocated all *.gma and *.img located in the 'Garmin-map' on my Edge 1030+ to my PC (also as back-up) freeing about 9 Gb on the Edge 1030+.

Garmin Express was now able to install the latest 'Routable Cycle map of Europe'.

Not a friendly work around but for me it did the job.

  • Yes, it is another Garmin crap...

My steps to update maps were following:

    - removed maps from Edge through Garmin Express,

    - needed to remove these maps manually, because Garmin Express was lying that these maps were removed,

    - tried to install new maps but it ended with an error "Map changes failed",

    - uninstalled Garmin Express and removed all settings, installed it again and added my Edge to it,

    - was finally able to install new maps.

Dear Garmin. Please publish your code on github and we will fix it for you/us for free <3

  • Upadating Cycle Map Europe, my way:

I first try the normal way using Garmin Express map manager and it fails. Pojected install time was around 3hours.

So I used Javawa devic e manager to delete the current map, it takes a couple of minutes to remove Img,dem and geocode files.

Back to Garmin Express I install the last release of the Cycle map europe in a very short time. It takes around 30 minute to do the job.

    Why bother wtith updatepath.

  • Had a similar problem. Garmin UK advised to delete all img and gma files but I didnt like to do that if possible. Then came across the post below that said to try selecting 'reinstall' map through GExpress. That worked. There was no insufficient space error and it reinstalled the latest version. Updated both europe and usa maps this way.

    • I have applied a "workaround" . . . Not very elegant but at least all my cycling maps are being correctly "seen" by Garmin Express. I went onto "Map details" and selected "reinstall map" for the three maps that were already installed (and up to date).

There must be a better way than this but it worked for me.

      • This is the actual solution - Garmin Express allows you then to remove those maps. It also shows them in different colour from the "base files" (which it considers unmodifiable). Somebody mark that as answer…
