Today there was an update available and suddenly I have the option to install Asian OSM City maps via Garmin Express... It tells me 10hr installation time, so I haven't tried it yet

People should learn how to download the map files themselves.
It's not that hard and it's trivial after the first time.
That way, people can get updates (and other maps) on their own schedule.

Unfortunately, the custom regions for maps on the second site aren't working (that's been months already).
But the country maps work.
Couldn't agree more with you. This was my workaround too. But if you buy a new navigation system and spend a lot of money for it, I think it is fair to say that you do not want to search and upload OSM, the expectation is that it works with the local maps installed. The original Garmin maps look also better to me and offer more features (but I could be wrong here)...

All I am doing is suggesting options.
Sure, things should work the way you want but when they don't having options is good.
People might want more up-to-date maps (the Garmin maps are only updated once or twice a year).
