Will an upgrade from Edge 1000 to 1030 plus give me better navigation for bikepacking and cycle touring on back roads?

My Edge 1000 is not lasting long on a battery and I am thinking to upgrade for the longer run time and bigger screen. The thing is the 1000 has been pretty useless when following a course at times. Even though you are on course it will sometimes tell you to do a U turn. This has happened when riding with others using Garmin that have loaded the same course and they are not having problems.

I have experimented with settings over the years and I am satisfied I have the thing well set up. On a recent 3 day ride operation the first day was great, then the second day it was not. The third day and it was good again.

I really do not want to spend big money and not see a huge improvement in operation.

I use a Varia rear light which is great. My old 500 was great.

Not interested in power cranks, DI2 or any of the advanced fitness stuff. I just want my basics to be awesome and connect to my Note 9 reliably.

Has anyone with my priorities been unhappy with the upgrade?

There are two types of navigation: one is basic "track following" and the other is "turn guidance" (what Garmin calls it).

"Turn guidance" (the big white arrows) requires maps. This works fairly well (on any unit) if the loaded track follows roads/paths on the map installed on the device. I've found it to work well on the 800 and the 1030. I don't believe the 1000 would be any worse. But one needs to understand how this works.

"Track following" doesn't require maps at all. It's supported by all** Edge units (including the 500, 1000, and 1030). Given that this is very basic, it's going to be more reliable. The 1030 (and the 1000) will do this just as well as the 500.

    So, maybe...

    * Track following might be more appropriate for your use.

    * You need better maps (with the roads/paths you are using).

    * The issue might be GPS reception or a slow speed.

If you are okay with just being directed directionally without road names, then your track that you create will not be dependent on mapping. If you would like to be prompted to turn "Right on Maple Lane" for example, you would need map coverage of the area you are riding in.

I hope this helps in addition to the response from
