Edge 1030 Plus avg speed drop tremendously and Speed number keep showing up and down

Hi Garmin Support Team,

I am from Garmin Users from Edge 1000 and very happy since 2016, recently due to the Edge 1000 malfunction, and not able to get old model hence has purchased an Edge 1030 plus a month ago.

  1. Avg speed Issue:
    1. When u rolling 28.0 km/h and when avg speed says 29.0 km/h; and approaching traffic lights or the current rolling speed lower than avg speed, it will keep dropping like every 10-20 seconds from 28.0 km/h to 27.9, then 27.8 km/h then 27.7 and so forth.
    2. This is even more obvious specially when stopped means pause it will not drop and the number stays there but when rolling below avg speed it dropped especially heading to traffic light.
    3. I've speed sensor, ever since I got the edge 1030 plus, I noticed the avg speed keeps dropping like within 10 seconds from 0.1-0.3 whenever approaching any traffic light. It ever happens in my Edge 1000 before.
  2. Speed number keep up and down while rolling:
    1. I also noticed when rolling with the speed sensor the number always like up and down. For example, says cruising 40 km/h, then 1 second showing 20 km/h then another second back to 40 km/h plus-minus; then another second back to 19 km/h plus-minus, another second change to 40 km/h repeatedly.
    2. Wonder if this is the root cause which results in how it affects the average speed mentioned in #1.

This has never happened in the Edge 1000 in the past and this is the first time I noticed ever since bought the unit. I've been monitoring this for quite some time and been asking around those with Edge 830 and 530, so far I didn't get any negative feedback.

Kindly look into this and let me know accordingly.

Thank you.

Regards,
Min Yoon

Nothing you describe is unusual or abnormal.
Avg speed = distance travelled divided by time in motion.
During a pause avg. speed must remain unchanged.
The fluctuations of avg. speed when the current speed fluctuates are normal and are most noticeable at the beginning of the activity. If you have been on the move for 1 hour or more, you will hardly see these fluctuations when rolling to a red light.

    To 2)
Check if the speed signal actually comes from the sensor. Turn the wheel in question at standstill.

    Hi there,

    Thanks for the theoretical explained,

I’ve read all the stuffs before posting this and I’ve discussed with my cycling friends too. The verdict is that (what I found so far), the newer device like Edge 530, 830, 1030 and 1030 Plus might have the different set of algorithms. Where the old model of Edge devices like 520, 820 and 1000 might have another old set of algorithms, hence the average speed drop significantly for every traffic light I approached.

    1. For any leisure ride I don’t bother much, I do have noticed that every traffic lights I approached (slowing down whenever there is red light) it will dropper 0.1 km/h most of the time where this symptoms I’ve not seen in Edge 1000. I’ve a close friend of my still using Edge 1000 I’ll borrow from him to test if possible.
    2. As if this behaviour I’ve seen it during the Edge 1000 unit too but not so often. Ever since replaced with the Edge 1030 Plus the condition even worst. I do spin the wheel got million times at home while on the bike stand. I’ve even upgraded the freshly cooked GPS firmware but doesn’t seems helping too.

I do appreciate your comment, thanks again. I just hope if there is any cyclists with Edge 1000 and recently replaced with Edge 1030 Plus has this experience.

is your speed sensor mounted on the back wheel?

That’s correct, always mounted at the rear wheel. Anyway I’ve got myself Garmin Speed sensor 2 and gonna test it over the weekend.

Just a side note, while disconnect the Garmin speed sensor 1 by relying on the GPS, when stopped at the traffic light the speed column still showing 1-3 km/h and like never stop like 5-6 seconds, I then connect back with Edge 1030 Plus. Couldn’t afford to see the avg speed keep dropping like diarrhoea.

So it is the magnetic field causing the numbers jumping around, will try out with the Garmin speed sensor 2 and see if issue still the same, else would place the speed sensor at the front wheel for the coming rides.

But I read somewhere in the past the ideal placement of the speed sensor is always rear wheel. Furthermore; the GPS speed portion is a joke I wonder why Garmin could release a half bake hardware and software to the consumer without thorough tests.

    Thanks again anyway...

I’ve tested with the Garmin speed sensor 2 and only managed to see the speed number jumping 4 times for the entire 100km ride which is how it should be as compare my old Edge 1000 paring with Speed sensor 1.

I’ll keep testing and let you know the review of few rides to come. I noticed the avg speed somehow not dropping as fast as before.

Please note that all these tests being done at the rear wheel placement.
