Unable to have both RTL515 and UT800 connected at the same time

Hi there,

First off: Why on earth is it so difficult for Garmin to release a product that actually works? It is like they have never heard of QA.

Anyway, I just received my brand new 1030 plus. Went through the setup process of pairing with my phone etc everything worked fine. Then started the process of pairing all of my sensors with the new device along with the Varia devices I have (i.e. RTL515 and UT800). Of course it wasn't successful. What is happening is that when both Varia devices are enabled in the 1030 plus the 1030 is just stuck on `Forming light network` if I disable either device and become very patient it is successful in forming the light network, as soon as both devices are enabled again everything goes down the drains. What I repeated several times is as follows:

  1. Remove both Varia devices from the 1030.
  2. Reset both Varia devices by holding in the power button for 8 seconds until all LEDs turn off
  3. Power cycle the 1030
  4. Either pair both Varia devices at the same time or pair them individually allowing the 1030 a lot of breathing space in between pairings.

The only thing I haven't tried is to factory reset the 1030 plus, but you would think that QA at Garmin wouldn't be that lousy that you would have to factory reset a brand new device just to get basic features working or is it?

  • I have Edge 1030 Plus and I recently bought the ut800 & rtl515 of course I have the same problem as everyone. After hours of searching and testing I found that if the hrm-dual is active and transmits before I turn on the edge everything is connected and working normally.I have tried it many times and it always works.

  • I can confirm switching on the the HR Dual first, solves the problem consistently. I have a ut 800 & rtl515 with an edge 830.

Since it seems such a predictable and reproducible error, I wonder why Garmin hasn’t fixed the issue in the meantime. The last post is a few months ago.

It is “a little bit” inconvenient to be forced by Garmin to wear the HR sensor in order to be able to use the automatic light functions wich the edge. Not on all rides I was planning to wear an HR sensor on my gravel bike. I use it to exercise but also to commute to work - and on the latter occasion I need the lights most and the HR sensor, well...not at all.

  • I have exactly the same problem and the only way I can get the RTL515 & UT800 to form a ‘light network’ is to switch on the Heart Monitor first just like it has been mentioned in an old reply. I find it extremely frustrating that Garmin has known about this problem for at least eight months (looking at when you first opened a thread) and they still haven’t been able to fix it.

I’ve escalated it to Garmin Technical Team and they tell me they are working on it and it is a software problem.

Cateye do similar lights for a fraction of the price so if I can’t use my Edge Head Unit to control the lights then what is the point in paying the premium for them as you can buy a radar without the light.

  • Hallo!

I have this combination off lights (RTL515 & UT800) and the 1030 plus with 4.10 software.

I have no connection problems with the lights. Sometimes it stucks, but if I turn off the 1030 plus and open it again, it connects with no problems. But this is very rare.

The only connection problems is with my  phone. Every other connection with all the sensors,  stays all the time with no problems. (RTL515, UT800, Hrm dual, vector 3 powermeter, speed sensor. )

  • Do you have the Heart Rate Sensor? It may be this that causes a glitch?

*Sorry just noticed you do have the HRM, it’s a mystery that it happens to some but not others.
Maybe I have an older model 1030 Plus (I bought it as soon as it was released) or older HRM as I used the older sensors I had with my original 1030. Maybe you have newer sensors.
My RTL515 and UT800 are brand new (a week old).

  • I was trying to edit my other post now. But I will write here.

The connection with the lights works also without the Hrm sensor. Every time I turn on the 1030, before every ride, so that it will make all the updates,  I can see that the lights are connected!  No other sensor were connected and no heartrate sensor, because the bike is not moving. Only the 515 and 800.

  • A question has come to mind.

Which HRM are you using, is it a 3rd party?

    1. I have tested the standard Garmin Dual HRM and unless the HRM is used (once paired) then it won’t allow the two lights to form a network. Unless you reset the whole unit and don’t pair the HRM then lights work every time, but the moment you pair the HRM then you have to use it otherwise lights won’t form a connection (even if you delete the sensor from the menu).
    2. I tested the Garmin HRM Pro new version and this works perfectly in harmony so in conclusion it is the old Dual HRM that is causing a problem.
    3. Also just to note the lights rely on other sensors being found and present before making a light connection, it is like the unit does things in a methodical order, when you switch it on like finding sensors, then once they are found then attempts to form a light network. You can manually switch sensors off in the menu so the unit doesn’t attempt to try to find them although it doesn’t work doing this with the Dual HRM as I have stated above.

NB. I have tested two 1030 plus now, one that was purchased in August 2020 and one a week old and the same issues with both units.

    I hope this helps

  • Hallo.

As I said, I use the hrm dual, that came with the 1030 plus. It connects with no problems with the lights. Even if the hrm is not connected. If I turn around  the pedals, then it connects the vector 3 powermeter also. I can then put on the hrm and it connects. Whatever sensor turned on, it will connect too.

But if I want to connect only the lights, then I have to turn the 1030 plus on and it will connect to both lights. I can see the lights turned on for check and they go off, until I press the start button. Now it comes to my mind, I have the lights to turn on, when I press the start a button. When do you have them to turn on???? When you turn on the 1030????

  • Lights are set to come on when I switch on device, not when I start a workout.

Also unit is completely switched off after every ride, I don’t use the sleep function.

  • So in total I’ve tested these devices and all have the same results….

    2x Garmin 1030 Plus

    2x Radar RTL515

    2x UT800

    2x Speed Sensor

    2x Cadence Sensor

    2x HRM Dual

    1x HRM Pro

    1x Stages Power Meter

    1x Quarq Tyrewiz

Unless my 3rd Party Power Meter is messing the lights up (I haven’t tested this yet) then it is a software issue.
