Course limit on 1030 Plus

I already noticed this on fw 2.30, and also on fw 3.0. It is not possible to store more than 100 courses on the device. If you copy another GPX to the device, it is not added to the Courses folder. I already informed Garmin of this bug.

On my previous Garmin 1030, the limit of 100 courses was not present. So I think Garmin changed something on the new 1030 Plus.

  • Have you tried the filter on just your courses? Several options available that should pinpoint the course you are searching for rather quickly. I don't have any courses by others showing up when using the filter.

  • Not yet. I don't keep courses on my device.

One reason it's "rather quick" is because the list isn't too big.

  • Agreed - I just discovered this while researching why a new course wasn't being added. You press "send to device" and the sync finishes, but... nothing happens, it just doesn't appear in the list.  Would it really be too hard to display "Course limit reached. Please delete courses to add a new one" ???

It's fine to have a limit, it's not fine to silently enforce it.

  • It is outrageous how bad and arbitrary this device is designed. What is the point of having a lot of memory if you can even store more than 100 trails on the device? I understand that there is a real limit when you run out of memory but just setting a threshold to 100 makes no sense. I like to store and keep as many trails on the device as possible. Garmin, please fix this.

  • I think Garmin's thinking on this issue is that with Garmin Connect available to easily download rides, why have the Edge hold them all. The Edge no matter what model has such a small screen that it is difficult to scroll through all the rides.

Secondly, you might have noticed that the startup time is much slower when there are many courses and rides on the device. It has to go through processing them each startup. Unfortunately, Garmin has a fairly weak file structure that is not nearly as efficient as say a Android device.

  • That’s about right.

The Edges are limited as far as computers go.

The big reason for that is to use less battery power and keep the device small. The Edges have to run continuously for many hours. Smartphones really aren’t used in the same way.

Some people want them to be like the smartphones they are used to but they’d have to be much bigger.
