way points Can I use way points to create my own route?

I own a Garmin Oregon 600  which I can create my own routs using a number of way-points. How do people owning the edge 1030 plus find this method of routing good or poor. and how well will it auto-route between way-points?

  • I think Garmin Edge devices work a bit different from your device. With that said, you can search for some POI/ address on 1030+ and navigate to that location. I think it will give you one or more options to navigate..But in general, Edge users create a full map ahead of time and use it as a guidance. The point being, user decides the route and it will help you take those turns. With that said, there are some auto routing features when you move away from the designed route but thats not as flexible as in other devices.

  • I believe there are two distinct things here: courses and routes.  Routes have a few data points that the device then fills in with auto-routing.  Courses pretty much have the entire track.  I've never tried using just a route on the 1030+ so don't know for sure if it even supports them.  But when you go off course, it can compute a new route, so it seems like it should be smart enough.

  • The Edges don't support "route" files (files that just have a few waypoints). If you use RWGPS, it's easy enough to try.

What the Edges use are track files (files that have enough points to accurately trace the curves and turns of the path you want to follow).

Activity files are tracks, which means you can use them too.

The old Touring would let you create routes by specifying waypoints (it was a pain to do on a small screen). I'm not sure whether the Explore models do.

This is nothing more than having the unit calculate a route to a location multiple times.

That is, there really isn't any reason the units can't do what the OP wants.

The units could use "route" files (the ones with a few points) too. Some non-Edge units support "route" files.

I think the problem with that is there isn't a easy way to distinguish a "route" file from a track file by looking at the data in the file. So, the Edges pick supporting one of the two.

The term "route" is ambiguous (so is "course"). "Track" seems more clear about what the Edges care about.
