Water ingress

Hi guys.
Received my new 1030 Plus after upgrading from my 1030.
On my second ride with the unit in the rain, I noticed that the Grade was at 0 and there was no altitude accumulating after about an hour into my ride. Then not long after this, I could no longer here the audible tones from the unit. When I finished the ride and powered off the unit, I could here the beep but it was very very faint.
So this looks to me like water has got into the Barometer holes and the speaker holes on the back of the unit.
Obviously not happy with this so have packed up the device and am returning tomorrow.
I never had an issue with this happening while riding in the rain on my 1030 unit before.

So just be aware if you are riding in heavy rain that this issue doesn’t crop up.

Hopefully I’ve just had a faulty unit and it’s not a bigger problem with these units in general.

MY 830 came with a rubber surround / protector. does the 1030 + come with anything to minimise ingress?

No it didn’t. These devices are meant to resist rain!

I rode two hours in heavy rain yesterday and so far I have not seen any problems with the 1030+. Also the tones work normally.

The rubber protector is an optional purchase. It doesn't provide water resistance at all.

Yes, I know that but I was a bit concerned when Garmin replied to my email and advised me to use one in heavy rain!

They obviously don't know what they are talking about! They are only to protect the unit from drops / bumps etc.

According to this review, the speaker location has been changed between the 1030 and 1030+. My understanding is that the speaker is no longer under the quarter turn mount, but is more exposed.

I received a replacement device after my original unit was returned because of this issue.
Sunday was my first ride in heavy rain again with the new unit. Noticed once again especially after my ride when I got home that the audible beeps once again were very muted. The Power Off tone was barely loud enough to be heard. When I powered the device on again a few days later the volume level of the tones were normal again.
I definitely think now that rain is clogging up the speaker port.

As I stated in my original post, I never had an issue with this with my 2 year old Edge 1030.

if water gets inside 1030+ through the barometer holes then we are screwed.

On speaker holes adhesive tape can help, which of course doesn't change much.

What will Garmin say ? As always, probably nothing...

If you put tape over the speaker hole...you won’t hear anything!

Thin, transparent tape doesn't change much at the sound level, it's almost the same.
Although the problem itself remains.
