Importing courses into NewFiles

When I load a GPX, TCX, or FIT course (e.g. from RideWithGPS) into Garmin>NewFiles and eject the USB connection (I am using a Mac), the display flashes, the unit restarts, but no course appears in Saved Courses.  Sometimes unexpected (perhaps working files) appear in Garmin>NewFiles or Garmin>Courses.  But on the next try, they seem to get cleaned up.  The process of importing courses to the unit seems to work correctly about 1 out of every 5 or 6 tries.  Any suggestions how to get this to work reliably?

  • Do you have any of these courses you could post here?  Does it seem to happen equally regardless of the file type (ie GPX, TCX, or FIT)?

Pretty much all files get on to your device through the NewFiles folder when you plug it in to the computer.  It might simply be TrueUp files, segment files, activity summary files from activities on another Garmin, etc.

Yes, it seems to happen regardless of the file type.  Also, in the instances where the import process actually works, the screen does not flash when the USB connection is ejected on the Mac.  It remains on, in USB mode for a few seconds, then reboots gracefully into user mode.  It seems like the unit goes into a tailspin when the Mac releases the USB connection, and that disrupts the pending import process when the unit recovers and reboots... somehow.

I also noticed that users were complaining that Garmin Express is asking them to update maps repeatedly.  I'm getting the same problem.  I wonder if this is related.  The update file is loaded, the USB connection is released, the unit crashes and recovers, but the pending map update is lost.

BTW - It's not just one specific route file.  I've managed to load 4-5 routes into the unit.  But each time it takes several tries.  The same route files loaded flawlessly into my older Edge 1000.

And unfortunately I can't yet seem to identify a repeatable set of steps or conditions that allows a file to import correctly on the 1030 Plus.  So I don't really have any other clues I can provide.

  • Interesting.  I haven't had any issues like this on my Windows 10 computer, and I don't even bother "Ejecting".  I just pull the cable when it's done copying.  I'd recommend contacting Garmin support directly.  Sounds to me like you might have a hardware issue.

FYI - Here is an excerpt of the chat with Garmin Support.  Unfortunately not much help:

    Garmin:

This is what you need to do when it comes to third party courses: support.garmin.com/.../

    Me:

OK, but for years now, I have been loading courses directly into my Edge 1000 (and before that, my Edge 800) and it works perfectly. I do not wish to use Garmin Connect. Is this no longer supported in your new products?

    Garmin:

Yeah I know, we came to find out that by dropping files into the Garmin Newfiles folder breaks the device the device by corrupted files from third party websites..

    Me:

I have tried the exact same files on my old Edge 1000 and my new Edge 1030 Plus. The Edge 1000 works perfectly (as always) but the Edge 1030 Plus fails - with the exact same file. I do not believe the files are corrupted.

    Garmin:

Follow the steps I provided in the link..

    Me:

    OK, I will try.

    Garmin:

Once it's imported into Garmin Connect you can send it to your device..

    Me:

I appreciate your help, but I have to comment that this is very disappointing. It seems this new device takes a step backward.

    Garmin:

No problem at all.. It's just that these new devices do not/can not be handled like the older models. These are more sensitive to files especially 3rd party..

If you able to post the course file you are having trouble with I would be interested in taking a look at it.

  • Does the file remain in NewFiles when it doesn't work or does it remove it?  If it does remove it, since it seems to be random, maybe you could try copying the file off the device to a new location before unplugging.  That way you could compare the file that was actually on the device to the original.  This would help isolate if the file is some how getting corrupted in the copy to the 1030+.

It removes the source file from NewFiles once you release the USB connection.  Sometimes it will leave what looks like a working file left in the NewFiles directory (long filename with the extension ".FIT").  But the source file always disappears.  On the next try, the .FIT working file gets removed too.

On further experimentation today (thanks to your earlier comment), I tried booting my Mac into Windows.  The import process seemed to work fine in the Windows environment, downloading the GPX file with MS Edge and using File Explorer to copy it into the 1030 Plus.  So I then I booted back into MacOS and tried using Chrome rather than Safari for the whole process.  It seems to work a lot better.  But I'm still baffled why it would work perfectly on my Edge 1000 and not on my Edge 1030 Plus.

Anyway, I seem to at lest have a workaround.  Many thanks for your help!

Please see my comments back to ekutter.  If you're still curious, I have put downloaded GPX files from both Safari and Chrome on Dropbox at: Link to Files

  • sstegert, I tried to copy your files to my 1030+. After disconnecting the USB, the 1030+ flashed its screen and rebooted. This is not normal, I have copied many more files to the 1030+ without any problem. Your GPX seems corrupt. I fixed it online and copied it to my 1030+ again. After disconnecting USB, all is well. No flashing screen and no reboot.

So, please check and fix your GPX file(s).
