I have a small yellow label on the top of the cable end. Easy to tell which way to put it in.
I know it's manageable... We have multiple micro-USB cables... We have multiple tablets (4) + Edge 1030 (2)... and they don't have the micro plug installed in the same way : facing up or down... You have to check before you insert the plug... But since we got our Hueway P9(2008)&P20(2019)... We plug them, no checking, and that's it... For me it's a game changer... for a new 2020 Edge.
My experience with Garmin devices shows that it is best to use the cable that came with the Edge. Other cables might charge the edge but not provide data. So, I always use the Garmin cable with the yellow label which is permanently inserted in desktop.
The larger end of the USB cable gives me more trouble inserting it correctly.
I don't know of any company that actively warns you not to buy their old products because a new one is coming, for obvious reasons. The best you can do is monitor online forums for rumours but thats not practical for everyone. Depending where you live and where you bought it, you may be able to return it for a full refund.
Dude the vast majority don't care. Most have a pile of micro-USB cables and chargers.
I have more micro USB that I can count... and I dont need fast charging since I just let it charge on my desk post ride anyhow
