GSC10 won't stay connected to 920XT

I've had continuous problems with my GSC10 speed/cadence sensor dropping out on rides. It connects just fine but drops out for 30 secs every 1-2 minutes. I believe the sensor is fine b/c it has no issues staying connected to my old FR305. My HRM for the 920XT stays connected without issues as well. I've read on the forum about some issues with WIFI interference but I've had the same issue out of WIFI range. Every couple of minutes my watch vibrates with a "Spd/Cad connected" message.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it's really messing up the data on my indoor rides.

  • Do you have other sensors too that are working fine with your 920xt in addition to HR? If so, I'd be even less inclined to suspect the 920xt having a bad receiver.

It could be RF from another source, cell phone, camera, etc. If you use something else that may produce RF, then turn them off for a ride or two and see if it makes a difference. Might be the bluetooth on your smartphone.

Or..... maybe it's a low battery on your GSC10, and the FR305 just has a better receiver for weak signals.
  • having the same issue here with both my power meter and my cadence sensor. Heart is fine, but cadence sensor and power meter keep disconnecting and then connecting, making the watch useless for indoor riding (haven't tried it out side yet) . Has anyone found any solutions?
  • Seems to be working now. I turned the GPS feature on for all the indoor activities and it seems to be functioning just fine now. Seems senseless to me but as long as it works, who cares.
  • wait, so the solution was to turn ON GPS for indoor activities? so you end up with the lost satellite contact/reception type of message and you just proceed with the indoor cycling?
  • That's right but so far I have been able to maintain a GPS signal indoors.
  • I've been having the same problem. GSC10 w/ the 920 gets sporadic dropouts (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/696166701 is a good example -- I was pedaling the whole time). HR has constant read the whole time. Swapped the battery a few days before on the GSC10 just to make sure that wasn't it. I ride indoors in only two places, at my apartment and in a class w/ about 15 others. The class (previous link) is clearly worse than in my apartment (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/693283907), which used to drop out more until I changed my AP channels to be outside the ANT+ range. However, the dropouts still happen.
I don't have any other sensors.

Was hoping today's 2.70 update would make things better, but it didn't.
It's been suggested that maybe the watch (end of aero bars) and the sensor are too far apart. The range is 9.8ft, the actual distance is 3.5ft, doesn't seem like an issue.

Other than trying Bike instead of Bike Indoors, any other suggestions?
Is there any debug information I can grab/provide?
  • Did a short ride yesterday, had multiple full disconnects: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/697191366. Tried turning off Bluetooth on my phone but leaving the watch on, still had dropouts. Turned off BT on the watch, a few momentary dips but no full disconnects. Turned BT back on and ended up having a full disconnect. Today for a longer ride, did Bike Inside and disabled Bluetooth on the watch only. Again, a momentary dip or two, but only one full disconnect around minute 55: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/698414153. Will see how it does in the group session later in the week.
  • I'm also getting disconnect/connect from my GSC10 cadence sensor. Any idea are we having a faulty 920xt or it occur in all?

I did a 15min indoor ride to test and there are 3 disconnects.

  • I took my 910 and 920, put them side by side, started and ended them at the exact same time, and went for a 90 minute indoor ride.
The 920 had numerous dropouts, the 910 had none as far as I can tell.
    920: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/703931843, 910: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/703944602

I decided to try replacing the GSC10 with the new magnet-less 010-12104-00 separate speed and cadence sensor and see what happened with the group indoor ride. I got the same sorts of dropouts, but mostly from the speed sensor: https://connect.garmin.com/activity/706747237
Another longer indoor ride w/ the same (and more) people but in a different location seemed to have no dropouts (still split sensors): https://connect.garmin.com/activity/708819475

I'm not sure what to make of this. It seems the 920 is much more susceptible to interference compared to the 910.
Having WiFi around seems to be a factor, but it's not the whole story.
  • GSC10 won't stay connected to 920XT

I have exactly the same problem....have Fenix 2 and never had this issue ....there appears to be a fault with these 920xt's....come on Garmin either replace them or issue a patch.
