magnetless cadence sensor future compatibility

I have an Oregon 450 and an FR70, neither of which are in the list of compatible devices for the new cadence sensor.

Is it possible that new firmware for these devices will include support for the new cadence sensor?

If not, why not? (technical or marketing)
  • The Oregon 450 is discontinued, so I wouldn't expect any updates for that (https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-trail/discontinued/oregon-450/prod63349.html).

The FR70 is a bit of a contradiction ... the web page specifically states that it does not support bike speed/cadence sensor's, but the manual states that it does. The device is reasonably current, so there might be an update. You might want to ask in the FR70 forum (https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?306-FR70), there might be a trick to configuring the device to detect the new sensors.

    Thanks for the response.

Yes, the 450 is no longer sold, but the Oregon 650 is, and it is not listed as supported for the magnetless sensor. In fact none of the current handheld models which support ANT+ are listed... As I understand it these devices and the FR60/70 only have ANT+ connection profiles (parameter sets) for combined speed/cadence sensors. Seems like a firmware upgrade to add the connection profile and change in setup screens could add support for the stand-alone sensor. Especially since these devices only report/log cadence, it is ironic that they do not support Garmin's cadence-only sensor.

I will look forward to upgrades which will add support,... but not holding my breath.
