New Speed sensor - no lights, will not pair, no activity at all from sensor

I've already setup an Amazon return for it once, so I'm trying another. Can't seem to get any activity at all out of the new speed sensor. The cadence pairs up just fine (green lights aplenty when I move the pedals), but the speed sensor is just a hunk of plastic. I have two of them in front of me right now, the original and the Amazon replacement.

Same deal on both - replaced the batteries, and tried the usual battery trick where you flip the battery over that I always have to do with my HRM strap when I change the batteries. No dice at all. I also left the batteries out of each of them for about 10 minutes, after reading some "ship mode" posts, but that did nothing either.

Am I just extremely unlucky, or is there some other method that I'm supposed to get the sensor to wake up and pair with my Edge 500? I've spun the wheel a ton on the stand, and even went for a ~2 mile ride with each of them, still nothing.

Any insight would be great. I'm riding a century tomorrow and had hoped to be able to use these - two duds in a row is pretty disappointing.

On the 500 you need to make sure that you are searching for separate speed and cadence sensors and not a combined Spd/Cadence sensor.

Select ANT+ Spd/Cad, then go to sensor details and select the "Spd…

Not to be redundant ... but you've got your Edge 500 configured for separate speed & cadence sensors? Not a combo?

Yup. Got another one today, and though I still had to pull the battery to get it out of ship mode, I did get it to pair by putting the Edge in Speed Only mode. Comically, now that I've set it back to Speed & Cadence, it doesn't detect my cadence sensor anymore. Good times, quality stuff... Ugh..

Of course you could try contacting Garmin (although that hasn't helped me much).

After removing the battery, wait at least 30 seconds to allow the caps to drain. Sometimes the units are in a ship mode (https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?88413-If-the-new-speed-amp-cadence-sensors-aren-t-detected-by-your-device) and waiting the 30 seconds will drain all the power from the device.

FWIW I also had no response from my Speed unit on the new Speed and Cadence sensor. I removed the back of the speed unit to expose the battery and found the smallest bit of grease between the battery and the internal electrical contact. I wiped that clean and the unit immediately worked.

Tried everything as mentioned here and in other threads, mine isn't working fresh out of the box either. I have not tried a new battery yet, so this will be my last resort... I'm not holding much hope.

I have the exact same issue as CQUIGS7. Same (new style) individual Cadence Sensor and Speed Sensor (no other product name or number- weird). Pairing to Edge 500. Cadence sensor paired straight away. Speed sensor wouldn't pair. Or even light up. I removed the battery and, as per DIGIBUD, found some grease. Wiped that away and replace the battery. This time the light came on, but still won't pair. I've set the Edge 500 correctly to Spd and Cad Sensor (not Spd/Cad Sensor, which is for GCS10). Tried removing the battery for over a minute, in case of "Ship Mode" described above. Tried a new battery. No joy.

UPDATE. Success! Moving the speed sensor well away from the cadence sensor allowed it to pair properly.

Fix for no lights 510 setup

This worked for me. I could not get it to pair with my Garmin 510 and the wheel sensor was not lighting up. So this video helped me

My fix was to clean the battery and contacts with alcohol - there was a light amount of oil/lube on the contacts preventing them from closing the circuit. I think it was on the other thread, but always something to check since multiple people have mentioned finding it that way.

Pairing issue resolved

I tried for about 2 hours to pair my speed and cadence sensors and read every tip I could find...even went through several batteries. Ultimately my solution was to install the app iPBike on my Galaxy s6. Picked up both instantly!
