Speed sensor creates ride activity.

I took a 44 mile Ride. Although I have a Edge 1050, I am using my Fenix 8 for recording data. I have been getting extra rides, within a ride from the speed sensor. When I look at garm connect on my Andriod, the only equipment on these extra rides, no maps, shows the only equipment to be the speed sensor.

Is this normal? (should not be). Is there a way to prevent this?

  • Do NOT connect the Speed Sensor to your phone. You only need it connected to the Edge andr your watch.

If you are recording a BIKE activity on your watch you will get duplicate activities if you use both the Edge and the Watch to record at the same time;. In fact, if you connect the sensor to your phone and use the Edge and Watch to record you should get 3 activities.

  • Yes, it is normal and intended. You are using the Speed Sensor 2 wich main selling point is what you want.
Just delete the sensor from the Bluetooth connections of your phone and it wont be able to upload anymore. Software updates are on a decately base, so it wont hurt if it is offline.

May I ask why you own a 1050 to then not use it for what is was made?

  • I wear my Fenix all the time. I used to just data record with the Edge. For some reason, the data is lost every so often. The Edge now is just for navigation and ride data. I delete the Edge activity instead of uploading. It is not fun at the end of a long ride to have nothing to show for it data wise.

  • If you really want accurate mileage or speed then there are reasons to use both.

One reason for using a Speed Sensor and a Edge is because there are areas where GPS is not reliable, especially if you are on a trail or path that has a lot of tree coverage. Normally on the open road there is no problem.

  • I asked because he uses a Edge 1050 and a F8, one to display and one to record.
Why and when to use a speed sensor I know, I use them for myself.

I even think instant speed is unreliable on the 1040 for a few months now if it only comes from gps. But this is another problem.

  • I'm just going to say thanks to all. I took a ride yesterday without the speed sensor and also deleted it from my phone, watch, and Edge.

The Edge worked as expected and was reliably imported into the data. The way I would expect it to.

  • It is no fun to do a 40 to 60-mile ride, only to have everything disappear. Maybe get an extra ride datapoint in.

I asked in this forum because I saw that problem ride in Garmin Connect. Instead of deleting it, I looked at the source for the offending ride. It was the Speed Sensor 2.

I want to eventually add it back into Edge 1050. (Edge 1050 is easier on my eyes than 1040. It's just a personal choice.). There are some areas where GPS is not available, and the speed sensor seemed like a good solution.
