missing rides because speed sensor 2 falsely thinks my watch has a connection

I bought a new bike and added a speed sensor 2 with the idea to record all rides, most with my watch as normal speed sensor, but some (mainly short) rides would sync directly from the sensor.

I noticed that the sensor does work correctly when connected to my fenix 7x, but when it should not have a connection a lot of rides are not synced although the sensor did wake up. The leds blink and I can see the sensor as connected in garmin connect mobile on my phone.

It seems there is something that makes the sensor think I made a connection although I kept my watch on the watch face. I guess a smarter way is to detect in connect whether or not there is an activity with the sensor connected and remove the sensor activity in that case instead of trying to determine whether or not to save on the sensor itself.

Are others also experiencing the same issue?

Both my watch and the speed sensor are on the latest firmware.
