Cadence and Speed Sensor 2 and Spin Bike.

I appreciate the speed sensor normally is mounted on the front hub and rotates with the wheel. Is it possible to mount it on the side of the spinwheel which is solid and get a reading as I'm not having any luck?? The Cadence works ok sort of...
