Speed Sensor 2 will not pair with Garmin Connect

I have a Speed Sensor 2 but cannot get it to pair with Garmin Connect on iOS.

  • I spin the sensor a bit to get it to wake up
  • I tap on Add Device
  • It recognises the sensor and says “Speed Sensor 2 found”
  • I tap on “Connect it”
  • It then says “Connecting to Speed Sensor 2” and below a progress bar it says “Completing setup of your device”
  • My phone asks me if I want to pair it via bluetooth and a say yes
  • Nothing happens for a while and then it says “Pairing Failed - unable to pair your Garmin device”

I have tried everything from retrying, removing from phone bluetooth and adding back, removing and reinstalling the battery, etc

I can pair it fine to my Fenix 5 via ANT+ and I get speed data so I know that is working.

Just can’t get the thing to pair with Garmin Connect.

Any ideas?

  • Hi.  Exactly the same process exactly the same issue.

I've searched the forums, lots of others with same issue and very little in terms of success stories.

Garmin don't seem to monitor these pages, so, reluctantly I think I'll be sending mine back and getting another brand.

    Cheers

  • Yep. I ended up returning it and getting Wahoo sensors instead. Worked first time with no hassles.

    Pretty disappointing from Garmin.

  • Agreed.....I was thinking of Wahoo.  Think your experience swings it for me.

I have the same issue. It used to work fine but stopped working a few days ago...

  • I’ve sent mine back and replaced with Wahoo sensors. Worked first time. Can use Wahoo fitness app and links directly to Strava (if that’s your thing).
no need to attempt to find another 3rd party app to record the activity etc (as Garmin don’t have their own app for recording activities).
works in my scenario, but hopefully you can get yours working again.

  • Try an older iOS device and make sure no newer iOS devices are trying to connect via Bluetooth. I had an older iPad and was able to get it to work whereas my iPhone XS didn't.

I think the top five threads in this sub forum are all about the same issue. There’s a response from a Garmin rep on one of the others, however this was some time ago. forums.garmin.com/.../909542

  • Thanks. That response was still after the release of the iPhone XS; unless it worked and subsequently broke. Given it's been nearly a year I think it's reasonable to assume this problem won't be fixed; I'll buy something else.

I’m going to try and get hold of Garmin support tomorrow. I’ll let you all know what happens, but it’s hard to disagree. It’s a pity because the Garmin design is nearer than e.g. Wahoo, but if it doesn’t work…

Unlike the head units I can’t find release notes for the firmware so I don’t know how old 2.3 is.

I have the same issue - driving me crazy - thinking about binning the Garmin and getting a Wahoo
