Speed sensor vs gps for distance - which one is used?

I have a speed sensor (ant+) connected to my Foreunner 645. When I go out for a ride, which is calculating my speed and distance? And is there any way of verifying for distance what the gps thinks compared to the speed sensor result?

I think I have a measurement right, but it feels like it's over reporting.

you can check the content of your fit file with Fit File Repair Tool's windows demo version

load the fit file and select "show / sources"

Ahh so this will calculate using purely the gps co-ords?

yes, it can also calculate with logged GPS data

Few days ago I used my speed sensor for first time. It was out of calibration (propably magnetized in transtport), speed was strange. When I go home I found that total distance is wrong - 18km visible on GC v.s. 13 km from gps track. I assume that distance is calculated by speed sensor not via gps.

That’s actually what I expected. How did you determine the difference?
