Speed sensor?

Hello all, I'm a fairly new member so apologies in advance if this has already been discussed. I recently purchased the speed/cadence sensor. My question is simple, do I need to install the speed sensor or is it redundant as I already have the GPS on the fenix 5 tracking the distance? I'd be interested to know what everyone thinks on the matter...

Thanks, Ed
  • GPS has position errors that can cause short term fluctuations in the speed readout, the gradient readout to be less accurate and the auto-pause to trigger when going slowly under tree cover. The errors tend to cancel out over distance so unless those short term things are an issue for you the GPS data is accurate.

The sensor can add overall accuracy for mounting biking where switchbacks combined with poor GPS reception due to terrain and tree cover result in a less accurate GPS track.
