Speed Sensor Jumping Up and Down

I'm using a speed sensor (one of the newer non-magnet ones) with my Edge 520+. Starting about a month ago, I had a speed sensor that was really "jumpy" -- The speed would jump up and down while I rode at steady state (it would jump 8mph, 20mph, 12mph, etc -- quite a bit). I thought maybe it was the speed sensor, so I bought a new one and it's doing the exact same thing.

Has anyone had this issue? As an example, here's a snap of my data from a quick trainer ride. I definitely did not move around my speed this much.

Thanks!

  • The speed sensor works by detecting the earth's magnetic field. Possibly the trainer is creating a magnetic field that is interfering or sometimes it can be a magnetized chain. If the problem happens on the road it is likely the chain and putting the sensor on the front wheel would be a solution. I believe Wahoo's sensor uses gravity so it would be a solution.
