Use a small precision screwdriver to prise up the smaller rectangular shaped connector. Tried three times before the sensor would reconnect with the head device. Thanks to BLee for the tip.

Same problem with my CS 1, died after battery change, tried different batteries, pried up the tabs, nada, almost bought a new one. There are two tabbs; one in the center of the base and one small one on the edge. I pried up the small brass tab (way up!) and it worked! Cadence sensor is working fine.
If the white card fell out, it is likely the SIM card. If that is the case, then it needs to be put back in the same position. If it is not the SIM card, then you may need to contact the manufacturer to find out exactly how the card needs to be put back in.
"The white card" is not shown in the online instructions for battery replacement, as far as I can see, but it is indeed very important and it does have to be put back in a specific position as you suggested. This is an adhesive membrane with a silver-color metal cage attached. The cage (also not shown in the instructions) grips the battery and makes contact with it on its + edges (even though the white membrane keeps it from making contact on the + back). The metal cage is designed to fit correctly in just one orientation inside the lid of the sensor. That orientation brings the wide contact area of the cage into contact with the copper + contact on the sensor body at the circumference of the circle, and it places the three little prongs of the cage into three little slots in the sensor lid. This all makes more sense if you can view it under magnification.

Same problem here and after reading through i was inspired to have a closer look.
After opening the back there are two parts, the main body and the backing cover with battery embedded in it.
My problem was the tiny T shaped silver tab on the backing cover, this tab lines up with the locking positions marked on the body, my T tab had been turned in towards the battery, away from the gold contact point in the main body.
I carefully folded the tab out away from the battery and back into its own recess / notch and made sure it was sticking slightly out (not flush).
Then i csrefully folded the gold tab up slightly on the main body.
Re-pair with device and problem solved.
