Speed censor for distance

I am thinking of getting the cadence/speed censor to put on my bike paired with my Forerunner 735XT. Will the speed censor also be used for measuring distance or will this still be measured using the GPS of my 735XT?

If a speed sensor is present it will take priority over the GPS data for computing speed/distance.
