Garmin vívoactive HR GPS Smart Watch shows cadence sensor -:--

New Viviactive HR which shows as paired and and connected to existing Garmin Cadence sensor on my stationary ...

Speed and cadence fields never change from -:-- or 0 values when activity starts -
even after some time , fields never update - I have seed drop outs with my 620 in the past...
all other fields seem ok ..
I have already changed the battery on the Cadence Sensor...

( have not yet tried with a bike using a Speed Sensor - using on indoor stationary bike right now...)

Ideas?

I also have the speed and cadance sensor connected to my VAHR and they are recorded correctly over the whole ride. I don't ride stationary, only outside and also don't look at the watch all the time, but the graphs show continuous recording in Garmin Connect. So I presume the watch receives data all the time.
