sabeard, Thanks, at least I now know the direction I need to proceed.
I had assumed that the MobileSDK download, was a Software Development Kit for producing the Andriod project :o
I continue to see "USB Device Not Recognized" after I have rebooted both watch and computer. All worked great yesterday and for, maybe, a month or 2, at least, but not today.

If would be great to have a direct link from app submission page as well. Or at least make it clearer.
Anyway, thanks for the answer. 
at least I found a solution now shortly after asking this question... I can write the ternary replacement function with a typedef or multiple data types instead and get what I want
