Altimeter loses calibration at night

Hello everyone,
I have recently had a strange problem with my altimeter. Never had this issue before and im running Sotwareversion 19.10 for longer time now.. Relatively punctually at the same time at night, it loses its calibration. I live at about 305m and the altimeter drops to ~40-60m. If I then set the altimeter to 305m again manually, it retains this setting until nightfall. I don't know if this issue comes form a malfunction of the barometer as well because you can see the drop there as well? (see attached pictures)

I have already tried this without success:

Restart
Night calibration on/off
Factory reset

Software version 19.10
GPS: 5.50
BMX: 5.0.5
BLE/ANT: 3.02
SNS: 22.07
WHR: 5.00.05

Someone has an idea how to fix that?

Greetings,

Jens

  • As I understand from the other forum (instinct non solar now closed)  this watch has a little (or great...) design flaw: the position of the holes of the barometric sensor (on the right)  are too close to the skin so you can obstruct them by sweating or even by bending the wrist. Try and  leave it on the night table and see what happens.

  • Update2: I just stopped the App in Andriod before giong to bed and the Calibration was still valid. So it seems that the App has something to do with my problem. Next test will be leaving the app running to validate that.

Update: I read somewhere in the forums that the calibration at night is done by using the location from the connected smartphone. So I left my phone in flight mode watch. The watch has kept it's calibration, values of height are correct. So it seems that the problem is related to the smartphone / garmin connect app. Can someone explain to me how the watch gets calibrated over night? Is this done by the garmin connect app or separately just with the location (gps) services from the smartphone. If i know that i can proceed by isolating the problem by for example deinstalling / stopping the garmin app.

    Cheers,

    Auto Calibration Nightly

The watch will calibrate the altimeter once every night during your sleep window set in Garmin Connect. If paired, the Garmin Connect app uses location data from the phone and compares it to the DEM information of the watch. This allows the nightly calibration feature to work better but is not required.

    • When starting an activity, the watch will show current calibration and give the options to accept, or recalibrate.
    • Nightly calibration is also performed when auto calibration is set to On.

To get location data from the phone to use for nightly calibration, location services will need to be enabled on your phone. For instructions on how to enable this on your phone:

  • Hey Mario,

Thank you very much for your help and efforts. My problem has definitely to do with the App. Yesterday I deleted all data of the App and make a fresh install (gave - calibration over night occurs and altimeter data is wrong / faulty like it was before reinstall. I don't think my sensor is broken because when i make a calibration with the watch before an activity data is valid and stable till overnight calibration occurs by the app. I don't know if this is a problem of the app or my phone (or both)? Someone has an idea how to isolate the problem?

    Cheers,

    Jens

  • Watch is calibrating perfectly when using the internal calibrating methods of the watch (for example before an activity) and values are stable till at night when the calibration in conjunction with the connect app happens. Google maps, Waze etc. are functioning fine so i think the internal location job / functioning of my phone works as intended. Workaround for now is to stop the app before i go to sleep.... someone has an idea how to fix that,/how to proceed?

    Cheers
