Instinct Solar HR problem

My Instinct Solar provides reliably accurate HR tracking on my morning bicycle commute, but gets “stuck” in a low range (80-100) over half the time on the ride home. It should be reading 110-160.  Conditions on the two rides are identical except that the morning ride starts uphill, so HR increases sooner. I always use the “Bike” recording mode.

Does the algorithm “learn” something from me sitting at my computer all day with my HR in the low 50s and reject the higher HR as artifact?

I am afraid the only help we can provide, is the advice to use a chest strap. It's the only way to get reliable HR.

Other than that, you can try adjusting the tightness of the strap, and the position of the watch on the wirst a bit upper above the wrist. You could also try testing different other activity profiles to record the HR during the ride - they are each tweaked a bit differently in order to filter out the typical noise from the optical signal, especially the impact of cadence. There is not much more you could do, and any future firmware improvements are rather unlikely at the old Instinct 1st gen, I fear.

Have you started the corresponding activity profile?
