Instinct Solar - 17.50 Public Release Candidate

Hello Instinct Solar customers,

Please read the instructions below to update the software for your Instinct Solar device. We've made some changes to how we deliver beta updates for our customers, so this forum post is now the primary resource for reading the change log notes – they are not available on another webpage. We look forward to your feedback!

17.50 Change Log Notes (changes since 17.00):

  • Improved barometer outlier data handling.
  • Fixed an issue where an Expedition activity tracklog could be lost if the device shuts down.
  • Fixed an issue where distance units for swim workouts would not show in meters/yards.
  • Fixed an issue where wrist heart rate could not be enabled during an activity.
  • Fixed potential crash during pool swimming activities.

New Software versions listed are in red.

  • System Software17.50
  • GPS: 5.40
  • BLE/ANT: 3.02
  • SNS: 18.00

Instructions for updating software:

  • Download the .zip folder containing the update HERE
  • Connect the watch to your computer.
  • Unzip and copy the included gupdate.gcd file to the Garmin folder on your watch.
  • If there is a SensorHub_XXXX folder, copy the GUP3467.GCD to the Garmin\RemoteSW folder of your watch.
  • Disconnect the watch from the computer and it will prompt you to update software.

For any issues that you encounter, please send an email to [email protected]. In your email please include the software version, and a detailed description of your issue, along with any steps to reproduce. Please note that you may not get a response to the email unless we need more information on the issue you report.

  • can anyone explain what the outlier data handling is?

  • This is from an unrelated article Outliers detection, but explains it well:

In statistics, an outlier is a data point that differs significantly from other observations. An outlier may be due to variability in the measurement or it may indicate experimental error; the latter are sometimes excluded from the data set. An outlier can cause serious problems in statistical analyses.

In other words, the barometer outlier data handling attempts to filter out signals not relevant to the atmospheric pressure, or to the changes of elevation. For example wind gusts, sweat or water entering the pressure sensor port, sudden changes of pressure indoors due to air-condition, due to closing doors/windows, perhaps also temperature induced errors, sensor noise, etc, etc.

  • Hi! I got issue after updating to 17.00, my OX Pulse stopped working, it blinks once sometimes, but that;s it, no led blinking, no information reading on Instinct Solar. I got GPS 3.01 / Sensors 18.00/ Firmware 17.50 beta now. Any idea how to wake them up ? constant reading is on, no power saving. Does it happen to be any hardware fault ? it appeared when updated firmware thou...

  • Seems like the watch is getting worse and worse with every update. Still no altimeter lock on auto mode.

  • If you want to Lock your altimeter, don't put it in Auto Mode, put it in Altimeter Mode and that's all.

  • What a pointless comment.

  • Still no altimeter lock on auto mode

Describing the situation when it does not lock might perhaps help to see where it may come from. And if you can reproduce and demonstrate it, it would be the best. I do not know in which situation your altimeter does not lock, but I suppose it is when you are indoors and you expect it not to change. If it is that case, then you could record a video (or a time laps video) of the elevation changing, while the watch stays static on the desk. Better yet, customize the Data Screens of an indoor activity (such as for example yoga or cardio, not floor climbing!), adding a new screen, where you add fields for the timer, the elevation, the barometric pressure, and also the temperature (yes, a sudden change of temperature will cause a pressure/elevation drift too). Then make a video how the values change in the time, post it here, and send it to the beta team at [email protected]

  • A pointless (and obvious) comment for such pointless problem.

  • you couldn't explain the problem exactly, so even I didn't understand

  • Please, fix the barometer and the altimeter. The altimeter in auto mode don't lock causing significant drift.
