Instinct Solar Surf - Durban

Hi guys,

Its quite interesting to read all of this & I'm having a few of the same issues after buying my watch 4 weeks ago.

- So on surfing the GPS is constantly losing signal when I'm in the water

- Once done, its readings including waves caught, speed etc etc are completely wrong.

-Then there is no tide data to display after a session.

I did speak to someone in customer support today & I have some new installation etc etc to do tonight.

So some suggestion after I've done this installation :

- Don't hold the watch under water for longer then 3-5 seconds  -  Really ?? Has anyone at Garmin tried to surf?

- Yeah prone maybe you can keep your wrist out the water but when you sitting there or having to duck dive / bail or even fall off?

- Try paddle softer - Again really ??

- Then why on earth do I have to sync with my phone after a surf to get the tide display again.?? Im right on the beach.

Surely with GPS etc etc I shouldn't have to connect to my phone to get the tide back on display.?/

Im venting but its extremely frustrating to spend quite a bit of money on a watch , which main selling point is the surfing app, which doesn't work properly.

I have some updates on beta 16.41 to do tonight and lets hope it works on my next surf sessions.

Stay tuned...

Yes, of course. That is normal. GPS does not work under water. This is the case with all manufacturers. The watch cannot receive satellites under water.

The wavelength of GPS signals is about 25 cm (10″). They are in the microwave band, and in fact this is about double the wavelength typically used in a microwave oven. And water is famously opaque in this band, that’s why microwave ovens work - water absorbs microwaves.

This is absolutely normal and not an issue.

If you want to have GPS reception...yes really ! !

  • Hi,

Ok thanks for clearing that up, literally just had a surf & watched GPS lose signal every time I held my wrist underwater longer then a few seconds.

Its difficult to sit on your board & keep your wrist out the water.

I guess its just frustrating when the FAB's of the watch are also its worst FAB's if that makes sense Slight smile

    Thanks.
