instinct solar not pairing + freezing on USB charge

Hi,

I've been using my Instinct Solar a while ago very successfully. The watch worked like a charm.
Out of the blue though I'm presented with 2 different issues that block me from using it at all:

- When plugging in the watch to charge it, it freezes.
The watch still charges, but the screen freezes and I cannot do anything with it anymore after unplugging the watch.

- The watch does not want to pair with the Garmin Connect app anymore.
The watch is recognized, I enter the PIN code but then the pairing fails for an unknown reason.
I have already tried a lot of the suggestions found on the internet (full resets, removing the watch from bluetooth devices on the phone, etc), but I'm always stuck on the same step.

As I cannot pair the watch with the phone, I cannot update its firmware.
And as it also crashes when plugging it into the USB I cannot use that route to update the firmware. (This is tested with multiple pc's / laptops)

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to proceed?

Garmin Connect is up-to-date and runs on a Oneplus 6 phone that can connect fine with other bluetooth devices.

The watch currently runs on software version 10.10.

Thank you in advance for any advice on how to proceed!

Stijn

  • I am sorry you are having issues with your Instinct Solar. When you plug it into charge it, if it is showing the charging motion itself, it should also mean that if you install Garmin Express on your computer, it will read your watch so you can update your software. Updating your software is your best initial step you can try to see if it resolves your issues.

    If your issue continues:

    - When your watch freezes after you unplug it from charging - hold down your top left CTRL button until your watch shuts off.

    - Then full reset your watch: How to Reset My Garmin Outdoor Watch

  • Hi Chris,

Unfortunately, the watch freezes upon plugging it in to charge. The charge visual isn't showing and the clock doesn't move anymore.
This resulted in a pc not being able to recognize the device either.
So the Garmin Express solution to update the firmware that way isn't possible.

I passed by the retail store yesterday and they confirmed it was 'bricked' enough to provide me with a replacement watch.
This one works properly and pairs immediately.
Hopefully this one works fine in the long run.

    Case closed I would say.

  • I have the same issue. Just purchased instict 2 solar from Amazon, and it worked until 1st update (via garmin connect). Frozen after update and since then everytime I plug in to charge - it freezes on charging screen...

    ridicolous...

    any solutions for that?

  • I am sorry there is an issue. Other than the original post above from 2+ years ago, I have not personally come across other Instinct series watches freezing while they are being charged.

If your watch still fully charges and goes back to your main watch face when you unplug it, you will need to decide what direction you want to go.

As for steps you can try, you can reset your watch to defaults through the System > Reset menu.

How to Reset My Garmin Outdoor Watch

    > Unprompted Reset

This reset will clear all settings, user profile, records, activity history, Connect IQ content, and other data.

It is recommended to read the steps in full below before performing them.

    1. Ensure the watch is powered off.

      • You may need to hold LIGHT for up to 30 seconds to turn the watch off.

    2. Press and hold BACK and START/STOP.

    3. Press LIGHT to power the watch on while holding these two buttons.

    4. After the first beep release START/STOP.

    5. After the second beep release the remaining buttons.

The reset is successful if the watch finishes powering up and goes through initial setup. Try the steps again if initial setup does not appear. Following the reset, place the watch outside with a clear view of the sky for a minimum of 20 minutes to acquire satellite data.
