Instinct solar - Poor GPS since update.

Since my watch has updated to the latest release 14.40 getting a GPS fix is a nightmare.

It would seem that the CPE is expiring overnight, every night, and that the connect app is not pushing a new CPE to the device. Something is definitely not right as CPE should last 14+ days and connect should push a new file.

Garmin what have you changed for the worse in your last update. Any ideas on how I can fix this?

  • I started with the Instinct Solar on 14.40 and am apalled by the subpar Garmin software quality (both on the watch and on the smartphone), while also being faintly amused by the one-sided fanboyism present in this far-too-little frequented forum and shocked that Garmin quite obviously doesn't care about the criticism we voice here. And the argument 'only people with watch problems write something here' really doesn't cut it with me - just look at Reddit, Amazon or DC Rainmaker's comments.

So, yes, GPS without a constant smartphone connection is much too slow, and the CPE seems to last for not even a day in my opinion. Also, the almanach data does only seem to come from a smartphone, not from a GPS fix which primarily originates on the watch, as is normal in every other navigation device I have used, and that even includes phones with AGPS turned off. On a side note, GPS almanach data is never accurate for more than a few days at best.

  • CPE expiring overnight was there for me from Day-1. How long do you sync to Connect to check if CPE is pushed. For me, it takes couple of minutes and hitting sync button 3-4 times for CPE to go to current state. It never happens in single try (I usually dont keep bluetooth connected).

    Check this thread.

  • It may have expired quickly in the past but it has only been apparent since the update. I used to get a fix in 30seconds, now lucky to get a fix in 5 minutes

  • I can confirm that since 14.40 initial GPS fix is quite slow.

I have checked my CPE file this morning, before walking out of home and it was up-to-date. Nevertheless, I had to wait over a minute under open sky, where I usually get a fix within a couple of seconds.

Yesterday evening, I got bored of waiting and started my activity. And strangely, even though the GPS loading circle was at less than 25%, I got an accurate track afterwards. Has anyone tried this? Perhaps, they have set the accuracy threshold too high in 14.40?

  • In the end, a soft reset using CTRL key fixed the issue for me. It definitely needed a reset, because, as I later noticed, the time was wrong, which explains why GPS did not work so good. After the reset, I turned on the GPS one more time and after that, it went back to normal.
