APAC Clients Considering Instinct Solar (correct as of 2nd June 2021)

Hello,

For those in APAC who are considering the Instinct Solar but have not put in your money yet, you should know that a core feature is currently broken on an APAC Instinct Solar that is on firmware v13.3. (If yours is not broken, please respond here =) )

  • Compass's true and magnetic north is off by a lot. In my case, it was off by 132 degrees.
    • No where on earth is the declination off by 132 degress.
    • This is not something that can be calibrated away.
    • This is also not something that you could set User Ref to offset it.
    • Basically, there is currently no workaround.
  • Consequently, navigation is a mess when you choose to have Maps set to "Track Up"
  • It seems to be largely solved for units who are able to install latest beta firmware.
    • You should also know that the beta firmware released here is not for APAC models.
    • If you follow the instructions in that web page, you don't get any update prompt and the firmware file keeps going missing, it means you have an APAC Instinct Solar.
    • APAC clients are known to wait 6-8 weeks for official firmware updates to reach us.
    • Do check if the unit you are buying is APAC or a US unit. I did not check mine before buying.
    • Don't expect much official help from these forums.
      • Your local support may be more helpful but
      • there is not much they can do either as they end up passing your questions to Garmin anyways.

For my detailed description of the problem (with video) mentioned in bullet 1 & 2, see here.

For a similar problem from another user, see here and here.

    • The 1st link indicates that not every official update is a good update.
    • The 2nd link indicates that the problem has been around for months: solved for some. unsolved for some others.

    Hope this helps.

    TC

    • It's cheaper to buy US model on Amazon (including shipping, duty, and taxes) rather than from local retailer or local Garmin store. It's true for NZ, dont know about other APAC countries. I have firmware 14.30 and compass readings are ok.

    • Hello! Thank you for your responses. It helps to build up all the key pieces of info that I think potential clients should know. I wished I did. I didn't expect buying a Garmin would be so "treacherous" so I just plunged in, given the branding that Garmin stands for.

Yeah.Indeed it is cheaper. However, I just found out today from Garmin's Singapore support that for US units, you would have to pay for it to be serviced, even if within warranty.

Good to know that 14.3 solved the compass issue for you. But as you can see from here, there still seems to be some battery issue. Such problems are often random and hard to repeat and hence prove.

    • I dont have battery issues. With my usage pattern I charge my Solar every 3 weeks. I run enough, all sensors are on, but I have smartphone sync off and synchronize manually daily.
