Navigate hike questions

I have two questions here:

  1. If I choose Hiking as an activity and select Navigate in there, does the GPS mode change to the Navigate GPS mode that's set? If I stop navigating, does it go back to the default set for Hiking?
  2. If I choose the Navigate activity - is the activity recorded or is it only taking me to my destination?

I'm going on a hike for a few days and trying to figure out whether it's necessary to start a Hike activity and choose Navigation in there, or whether I just use the navigation option. As far as I understand if I choose a Hiking activity, I can navigate to multiple points in the same activity, but if I chose the Navigate activity, I'm not sure the same applies and it's starts a fresh navigation every time (is that correct?)

Very good question.  I don't know for sure, but I would assume GPS would default to the specific app setting.  I don't see any other reason to have the option to set GPS configuration in different apps it they can't be different.  I can't find anything in the manual or online, so I maybe someone from Garmin will answer to eliminate speculation.

Unfortunately, to my best knowledge, there is no way to detect whether GPS, GPS+Glonass, or GPS+Galilleo was used during an activity, so I am afraid nobody can aswer it with certitude. Using the settings of the selected Activity profile would be certainly more logical, but there is no way to verify it. And I am afraid that even the Garmin employees posting up and then to this forum, will not know. You'd need to speak to the developer having the access to the code, and that's not going to happen.

The only way to make sure that the watch is using the setting you want, is setting both alternatives to the same option.

Yes, it is recorded as a "Navigate" Activity of the category "Other". You can change it to whatever else type you want, later in Garmin Connect

  • Thanks Trux. I didn't think I'd get an answer for the first question, but setting activities to the same GPS setting negates needing the answer
