Recovery heart rate: how and when does it really work?

Hi guys,

Ok so you might have come across the recovery heart rate, which you can measure after an activity by selecting "recovery heart rate" instead of immediately pressing "save" on your Instinct. It then waits 2 minutes and stores the HR after 2 minutes.

Sometimes my instinct seems to store this recovery HR even when I don't ask it to measure it. I see this in my data after my data uploads to Runalyze.com. I think it would be nice if it always did do that, automatically, as one tends to forget sometimes. Under what circumstances does the Instinct capture the HR 2 minutes after an activity automatically, and how do I customize this? I cant find anything in the manual on this and I can't determine the logic of when it captures it and when it doesn't.

Cheers

Alexander

  • I am not quite sure the recovery HR is stored in the FIT file of the activity at all, but if you upload one such file here, I can have a look. Possibly Runalyze just shows the RHR when there is long enough period of rest or cooldown recorded with the activity data.

But if the RHR is indeed stored in the activity FIT file, then it can be done only if you wait those 2 minutes till the RHR is displayed, and saving the activity only then. There is no chance it could be saved, if you select the Save option before the 2 minutes resting period.

  • I might be missing something, but runalyze reports the resting heart rate as it is read from the connect app, not the recovery hr. Where do you see the recovery hr in runalyze?

  • As I wrote, upload the FIT file here (you have to zip it, and then use the function Insert » File/Image/Video » Upload), so that we can have a look whether it is saved by the watch into the file or not.

  • that's all I get in mine but I always stop the activity immediately so my guess is that there are insufficient data to calculate the recovery hr

  • I have checked two of my recent workouts and indeed, one of the .fit files contains a "recovery_hr" event (besides "start" and "stop_all"). After the first one, I waited for 2 minutes, but after the second one, I did not.

I didn't even know about this until now, so I am not completely sure when does the watch store the recovery HR, but I guess it is indeed if you wait for 2 minutes. And whether the time interval can be customized or not, well, I don't think so. I haven't seen such an option either.

It was a curious thing to learn. Thanks!

  • Today I used the menu option to measure the Recovery HR and then saved the activity. The result shows up in the runalyze data!

  • Hi I think my question wasn't totally clear. My apologies. I don't have a problem finding the Recovery HR in the Runalyze Data. When my Instinct acquires and saved the Recovery HR, it does show up fine in my Runalyze, just as   has shown below. However, what I am unclear about is WHEN the recovery HR gets captured in the first place. Of course, it gets captured when you manually select it from the menu after you hit the GPS button when completing an activity, then scroll down and select Recovery HR instead of just save, as @darnich has shown as well.

However, and this was my original question: what OTHER times or UNDER WHICH CONDITIONS does the watch AUTOMATICALLY save this information? I am asking because I have some runs or even walks where I did not chose to save the Recovery HR after the activity, and it STILL shows  up in the Runalyze data. I.e. could this be a matter of e.g. a lap press finish, where the activity isn't ended for another 2 minutes during cool down, and therefore the watch saves it automatically after 2 minutes or vice versa?

I haven't been able to figure out under which circumstances it does record and when it doesn't. This is kinda relevant because of course if you use the feature to track your fitness level to see how fast your HR goes down over a couple of months, you do have to make sure you start the 2 minute time it takes to measure the recovery HR, RIGHT AFTER you finish the last active run, and not necessarily after the activity that may include a cool down period in which your HR will already go down before you start measuring it. But this is precisely the issue. The Recovery HR track feature only makes sense if it starts right after a run, and/or AT THE SAME TIME as any cooldown period. Otherwise, it's pointless.  Hence, in order to be able to sensibly use it, it would be nice if the manual actually detailed how this feature gets triggered or how it can be used effectively.

  • However, and this was my original question: what OTHER times or UNDER WHICH CONDITIONS does the watch AUTOMATICALLY save this information?

I did not explicitely test it, but as far as I could observe it, the RHR shows up anytime I stop or pause the activity, and wait 2 minutes or more before leaving the activity menu by saving it. If you do not wait the 2 minutes after the stop before saving the activity, there is no chance the RHR value could be saved into the activity FIT file together with the data.

  • Ahhh... Interesting. I will try that. Thanks so much for the pointer.
