The “surf-edition” simply doesn’t work while surfing. Can Garmin fix this problem?

I think a surf watch that doesn’t work while surfing is a problem. The wave counting is simply a joke: you surf 10 waves and it counts 30 or 40... Same for wave speed: it estimates 2,5 km/h average wave speed... That’s ridiculous: you move at 2,5 km/h when swimming, not during a wave ride (usually 20-25 km/h). Moreover, there are no data about total distance paddled and the heart rate monitoring is quite inaccurate (Garmin says that wrist heart rate is not accurate while swimming ad suggests to use a chest-strap... very confortable while surfing!).

As i can read, every surfer that used this device experienced the same problem.  It’s incredible a brand like Garmin sells a product called “surf edition” that simply doesn’t work when surfin. Can you fix the problem or we have to ask our money back?

  • Same as per the surf app that comes with the Fenix 6. It is a joke...they even ask for feedback and then did not reply not implement anything... Came to the instinct forum to see if the issue was as well with the surf edition and it is indeed.... Very dissatisfied and disappointed.

  • Unbelievable... Garmin is a leader brand in this business and should be reliable. If they launch a “suf-edition” watch, the watch has to be ok. It’s unacceptable this situation. I spent 400 euros for my “surf edition” watch, it MUST works properly or Garmin has to give my money back.

  • Man, you just summarized everything I wanted to say to Garmin. I’m really pissed off with this watch. When I bought it I thought garmin had spent some time developing it, but it’s just marketing.

I used to surf with my Apple Watch using Dawn Patrol app it was waaaay more precise.

  • It's amazing how many people are making similar comments. My experience is the same, I've only had mine for about 2 weeks now, and it doubles and triples my wave counts, and apparently yesterday I rode a wave at nearly 50kmh, hahahaha, not likely, the fastest wave I've rode was tracked at 36.9kmh using the Ripcurl watch, and I wasn't even close to those speeds yesterday.

I had the Ripcurl Search GPS 2 previously, the tracking was good to within a couple of waves, the accuracy of speed seemed reasonable, and even though the desktop app was a bit clunky, nearly everything could be edited. The only downfall was having to send it back to Ripcurl twice to have it replaced, once moisture was detected in it, the 2nd time, no reason was given, but Ripcurl customer service was fantastic with it.

This is what brought me to the Garmin Instinct Solar Surf. Like many others I assumed Garmin would be all over this stuff, but my experience has been very disappointing. Reading the full watch instructions, watching youtube videos and scrolling the garmin website and forums for answers to get my watch to track waves properly is not my idea of fun.

I've been playing with the GPS settings in the hope that it will show improvement, but I'm not confident given the feedback I've read on the forums. Yesterday, I was hoping that Enabling Auto Climb, and setting 3D Speed and Distance may have a bearing on the accuracy factor with the Surf app, but guess what, these features aren't available in the Surf app.

I too an considering asking for my money back, or alternatively, sending it back under warranty as it's not working.

  • Same problem here. Also, the tide information cuts out ten times a day and requires reconnecting to the app, lame! The display should also have an option to view the tide while you are recording a surf session. Of course all of this is pointless unless they fix the other problems.

  • Same problem with my Instinct Surf Edition.  I had an apple watch and the wave count was much more precise, I was also able to edit the “wrong counted waves”. I was expecting a much more better watch for the surf edition. I’m thinking about selling mi Instinct Surf watch, it’s maybe one of the worst purchases I’ve ever made.

  • I called them yesterday, and one of their answers was to « keep the watch out of the water when waiting between sets » and to « Try paddling softer if your watch is starting to record waves too soon, or recording outside of a wave », no joke. Seems no one who worked on this watch surfs if that’s the answers I’m getting.

when I mentioned others having complaints they didn’t seem to be aware, more of us should give them calls, might move them to work on an update..

  • “keep the watch out of the water“ and “Try paddling softer”.
Definitely the “best answer” award! JoyJoyJoy
