Seeking official response on sleep mode

I've been struggling with sleep mode (and the fact that it is impossible to disable it being automatic) since I've gotten this watch. I've owned the OG instinct, Instinct 2 and Instinct 2X before and each one of them had issues with automatic sleep mode. In the past I simply accepted that the feature is useless but now I actually want to use it because sleep is a major focus for me.

I've looked around these forums, even those for different Garmin wearables. Every time issues around sleep mode get brought up there appears to be complete silence from Garmin. I'd like to get an explanation why these issues are being ignored.

Just today, having major trouble falling asleep and having to try again after several hours, the watch decided to disable sleep mode automatically THREE TIMES. Each time it woke me up once I finally managed to fall asleep. This is despite the fact that I have previously turned off DND mode during sleep mode in the settings and have started enabling both manually separately. Somehow, this setting has enabled itself.

Why does sleep mode disable itself automatically? In what world is it a good idea for the watch to decide "you're not sleeping" when I have explicitly told it that I'm sleeping? Why is it mandatory to have a sleep schedule when so many people do not have the luxury of a regular schedule? And the weird thing is that I did in fact get a correct sleep time measured. So what is even going on here?

Could we just get the option for sleep mode to be fully manual like it is on Apple Watches for example? It's not like the issues I'm having are unique. People are very consistently submitting the same complaints as I am, both here and on Reddit.

  • Why does sleep mode disable itself automatically?

It does not happen to me, but I've set the sleep schedule quite wide, and sleep mostly within the predefined time frame. However, Sleep Mode disables for example when you (accidentally or intentionally) press the Start button, so that is one possibility to consider. You could try locking the buttons while sleeping to exclude this factor. Possibly Sleep Mode will be also disabled at the scheduled Wake Up Time, though I did not test it.

  • Nope, that’s not the issue. I never get this while sleeping normally. It only happens when I have sleeping issues or when I’m shifting my sleep schedule.

Even if I go through the hassle of setting up my sleep schedule to the expected times (yes, I’ve tried) the watch proceeds to start sleep mode automatically before the time I’ve specified when I’m stretching or sitting down before bed. Then, when I start moving again it goes “Good morning” and tells me I’ve slept for 25 minutes. Then it doesn’t record anything while I’m actually sleeping and repeatedly disables sleep mode.
Sometimes the watch starts recording sleep without appearing to be in sleep mode. I even use the watch and do activities like yoga and when I enable sleep mode manually it shortly after show’s the “Good Morning” screen.

edit: Oh, and I also had this happen while recording a nap. The watch just started recording sleep instead and the continued recording sleep even after I ended the nap and kept moving around and using the watch.
