AMOLED Or MIP And Why?

I went with the I3 AMOLED 50mm for the following reasons...

  • Higher resolution
  • Bigger screen
  • Vibrant colors
  • More memory
  • No washed out look at certain angles (That really bugs me for some reason)
  • Lasting at least a full week between charges is fine for my use case
  • Watch faces look better

Wondering what other people choose, and why.

  • I want to go with the i3 solar because of battery duration.
    First garmin purchase.
    Intended use is :
    - daily workout/run/bike/pool
    - occasionnaly SUP/kitesurfing
Also i would like to be able to install app like Hoolan for kitesurfing.

I m a bit lost right now ans don t know which to choose between i3 50 solar and fenix 7X solar that i can get on discount for same price.

What worries me is the feedback on i3 solar right now with the bugs, and also the small memory in case you can t install apps.

Can you share advices pro/cons for those who tried both ?

    Tks

  • Did you find it worth it? I have a 2x and was wondering if the upgrades where enough

  • if you have the 2X, then I would say no. But the I3 display looks a lot better than the 2x display. if you’d like the ability of creating folders from more organization, then you’d go with the I3.

The I2 series is at the end of its lifecycle in terms of meaningful updates. The I3 has the ability of adding more to it from a software standpoint to set it further apart from the I2  series.

  • Good point. I hope they bring some new software features (like ClimbPro or the ability to see al least POI in the breadcrumb maps) to the 3. They should do it at some point, the majority of people seem upset with this refresh

  • Beautiful AMOLED screen that is turned off 99% of the time - great :) Waving your hand to check something, but how to track your training, for example cycling?

You can enable AOD during Activity (actually, it is the default setting). Personally, I do not need and do not want it - when I raise the hand, or twist the wrist to look at the watch, the display comes on before I can see it. I really do not need the watch lighting permanently under my sleeve.

  • If the screen is on during activity, the battery will not last as long as in MIP, so you are wrong that AMOLED is equal to or better than MIP. Your use of the I3 is not consistent with the intended use of the watch and the test is an extreme use model. It's like putting your watch in a drawer and seeing how long it will last. Nobody does that. If the screen is lit under your sleeve, you won't be able to see it, so it won't bother you :)

  • Your use of the I3 is not consistent with the intended use of the watch

If the intended use of the watch were AOD, then the option would be enabled by default. It is not the case. AOD is enabled by default only during activities, and it was the first thing I disabled after my first run. For me it is completely useless, and I would disable it even if it did not consume any energy, and did not burn in the display.

    Nobody does that

I do, and am happy with it. And I know a few other users who use the watch in the same way.

If the screen is lit under your sleeve, you won't be able to see it, so it won't bother you :)

And what is it good for? Just to burn-in the AMOLED display, and consume power.

  • Your conclusion is 100% accurate
I do receive  200 - 300 messages per day (I have never count them, they just happen ). That constantly opens a connection with the phone ,plus the time I use the screen to check it / delete. 1 message won't hurt, but in masses, they  do.
I work in IT and messages is part of comms (Ms Teams, Slack, WhatsApp)
My solution, stop them from getting into the watch altogether.

  • MIP.

It was a simple choice. Not because of the specs. Simply because I like it.

I am quite new to the Garmin world. I use Android Wear smartwach for most time. But I got myself a Swim 2 about two years ago just for swimming, which is my basic activity. I have to admit, I was in shock at first about that display. Felt ancient. And ugly. I remembered that time looking at other Garmin products, noticing the Instinct. That was the only watch appearing even worse to me than my Swim 2 at the moment. And that ridiculous circle, making that tiny display even more useless!

Time passed, I got used to my Swim 2. I could appreciate the display in the pool. It was perfectly visible at all times. I enjoyed running with them, even though they offered only the basics for running. And slowly I got dragged to this Garmin world, full of wearables that run basically the same hardware and software but differ in metrics willing to show you based on the money you are willing to pay for it.

Since January I have been looking on the new Instinct 3. I love the design. I did not need it. There was no reason for me to buy it. So I bought it. I have the Instinct 3 Solar 45mm for just over one week. Been swimming and running with them daily. And I love it.

And why MIP? Because every brand uses Amoled now. MIP seems a dying breed. But I think it is the best thing you can have for sports watch for pool and outdoor.

And because of that ridiculous circle. I had to have it!
