Instinct 3 with AMOLED now available!

Well...what a pleasant surprise!

3 different sizes and 3 different displays...or rather two. The old display is available with solar and without.

Tactical not out but the information on their website stae that the new Instincts have tactical features.

Colors are....interesting!

  • ... and BTW, although Instinct 3 does not have the full-blown maps like other models, the AMOLED model does have some rudimentary maps. AFAIK, they do not show roads, paths, or the terrain, but names of towns or important landmarks are supported. Possibly it may also have a DEM map for altimeter calibration, but unlike with the town names, I am not certain about it.

  • But that means that the extra memory is just only like a fix of problems the I2X had, right?

I'm trying to justify the purchase myself. The Amoled breaks the battery life where the Instinct was excelling and without maps, touch... I don't see it.

And the MIP seems the same I2X with that extra memory, SatIQ and better solar charge. It would be nice to know if the processor has been upgraded, at least.

  • Very interesting this about the maps. Thanks trux

  • I don't see a reason why they shouldn't add a climb pro or remaining climb to the next waypoint. That extra should be enough for me to buy the new version, and it's just software that even the FR955 has.

  • I am 100 percent convinced, that at least one "PRO" model will be released. It is necessary to earn as much money as possible Shrug

  • The Amoled breaks the battery life

Not necessarily. Wait for the reviews. If you can live without the Always On Display option, AMOLED can even beat Solar.

  • I'm interested in the AMOLED because it's more screen real estate, color, and very sharp.  Not having maps is a big miss, feature-wise, but I prefer not to use a tiny watch-sized map anyway.  But it could certainly be there.  It's on cheaper Edge units!  Not having the latest HR sensor doesn't bother me either, it's still better than the one in my Instinct Solar.  I waited out the I2 for the 3 and now I'm not sure I need to spend $500 just to get a color screen basically.  Yes, flashlight, Garmin Pay, SatIQ, and some pointless metrics, but until it goes on sale, I'll wait and see what else is next.

  • Here you can buy an epix pro gen 2 47mm for a very similar price as the I3 Amoled, which is (by far) a lot better. Or even the FR955 that costs near 300$ here and has everything but the flashlight.

For me, what was interesting in the Instinct was the MIP, the old school style and I was expecting a big improvement, specially the MIP screen. But the real thing is the new MIP version does not justify to spend another 500$ if you already have the I2X.

Garmin wants all of us with Amoled watches. But this watch seems to lack most of the things that should be there.

I want but there's no reason to buy an Amoled I3 considering everything. Very strange movement

  • Garmin wants all of us with Amoled watches.

No, they do not want. In your place, with your requirements, I would either stay with the I2X as long as it works, or if you really cannot live without some of the features, I would change to another model offering what you want. With the release of I3, Garmin does not force you to update. If you really want a new watch, have a look at Enduro 2 - great battery life, high-res MIP, maps, flashlight,... and after the release of E3, you can find it already for around $500 too.

  • I don't like the screen of the Enduro 2. Near 540$ there's the Epix pro and F7 Pro (both in 47mm non sapphire). That is the thing. For me is Epix/F7 Pro vs I3 MIP. Amoled I3 is a big skip considering that.

So I3 MIP and keep what I like about the Instinct or jump to a better watch. I have read the I3 MIP has better contrast than the I2X and the large fonts. That's interesting. That MIP should have had the resolution and the size of the FR955 though. At least something more. Not an 1.1 inch screen with 176x176 pixels for a 450$ watch.

In my opinion it is no worth at all the I3 Amoled when you have better watches for just 40 bucks more.
