Instinct 2x Bluetooth dead? Bluetooth mac address is 00:00:00:00:00:00

Noticed i was not getting notifications on watch for a while now. Largely ignored it thinking i probably didn't have watch linked with phone. Finally discovered i actually can't pair it at all.

After more digging realised the mac address of the Garmin instinct 2x Bluetooth is showing as 00:00:00:00:00:00.

Tried a watch reset, that did nothing. Spoke to garmin support who said to try Garmin Express and interestingly it did seem to add a Bluetooth software update to the watch even tho i was already running latest 16.11. But unfortunately the update installs and restarts the watch, but the issue remains. The update is still available to install and i can try again and again but no luck.

Noticed other Garmin watches have had this issue going back many years. So, it's probably safe to assume the Bluetooth is dead and I'm out of warranty. Can't say I'm too impressed it's still a very new model watch and should not suffer this sort of failure so early on.

  • Perhaps the additional firmware component cannot install because of insufficient room on the storage. You can try cleaning up the following folders, to make the needed room for the firmware update and then attempting to install the firmware again:

    • //GARMIN/Activity/ - all files
    • //GARMIN/RemoteSW/ - all files
    • //GARMIN/Debug/ - all files
    • //GARMIN/Courses/ - remove unneeded courses
    • //GARMIN/Workouts/ - remove unneeded workouts
    • //GARMIN/Text/ - remove all unneeded languages

You could also remove some unneeded Connect IQ apps, if there are any

  • Good thinking. But alas it didn't work. Still same issue, seems update doesnt apply as its always available to install. 34MB free after removing all those files.  Very annoying to lose Bluetooth capability.

  • Still same issue, seems update doesnt apply as its always available to install.

What exactly does the update show, when you click the button "Show Details" in Garmin Express? When still on the cable, do you see some *.gcd files in the folder /GARMIN/RemoteSW? And which version is at ANT/BLE on the screen System » About of the watch settings menu?

  • thanks for your help. Here is what Garmin express shows when i click on "Show Details"

I do see these *.GCD Files in /GARMIN/RemoteSW

Here is what the System> About screens shows on the watch itself:

  • You could try installing an older firmware version. Have a look at the Beta Program forum for old side-load packages, and installation instructions. Choose the firmware including also the previous BLE/ANT version, and side-load also the additional components. If successful, try upgrading to the recent version again. If it does not help, contact the Support to see whether they can help you.

  • Thanks, it looks like the only release with an earlier version of the BLE (v1.04) goes back before the instinct 2x existed (BLE 1.03 some 3 years ago).

But i will try some previous releases and see if any luck.

  • Well looks like no luck. It was worth a try tho. Thanks for your help. its back to Garmin support with these results, and hopefully my Garmin loyalty remains depending how they handle this situation.

  • just wanted to reply back to commend Garmin for offering to replace watch even Tho just edged out of warranty.
