"Resume Later" causes sync failure

Has anybody else seen "Resume Later" cause synching issues?

I have an Instinct 2X synch'ing with a Samsung Galaxy S22+.   I recently noticed that my activities hadn't synch'd for 2 days. Heartrate, steps were synching, but it also seems to cause sleep to not sync and issues with watch config (e.g. adding a Garmin pay card).  Forcing a sync in Connect did not work.  I tried the usual:  restart watch, disable/enable bluetooth on phone, restart phone, remove/add 2X in Connect with no difference.   Only on after a 2nd watch restart did I notice that when the phone started up that it showed that I was paused in an Activity.   I realized that I had stopped an activity with "Resume Later" a few days ago.   Once I saved the activity a disable/enable of bluetooth resulted in a successful synch of all outstanding activities.

Background:  I use a "Dog walking" activity to track distance of my daily dog walking.   Sometimes, if I know I will not have any other activity I will just "Resume Later" so I can continue tracking my dog walking with the next walk.  I now remember having other synching issues in the past which were likely caused by have an activity in the state of"Resume Later".

That's not really the purpose the feature was designed for. "Resume Later" is used when you need to stop for a longer time (for example for a lunch) during an activity, because the standard Pause function times out after certain amount of time. Also, Resume Later, some features are paused - it is documented at How Do I Pause a Recorded Activity? | Garmin Customer Support

NOTE: When using the Resume Later option on compatible devices, features such as Sleep, Stress, Body Battery, and other daily wellness tracking features are paused. It is recommended that you stop and save your activity if wanting your watch to record Sleep, Stress, Body Battery, and other daily wellness tracking features.

  • Thanks, I missed that note.  That would explain why various tracking and features might have paused while an activity was in "Resule Later" state, however it does not explain why only heartrate and steps sync'd after resuming and saving the activity.  Other, following activities and the wellness tracking features would not sync until I  did a bluetooth stop/start.

  • it does not explain why only heartrate and steps sync'd after resuming and saving the activity

HR and Steps continue to be logged regardless of the pause / activity mode. I recommend not abusing the Resume Later for purposes it was not designed for, if you want to avoid this kind of problems.

  • Based on the referenced documentation, I can understand some things not sync'ing while in "Resume Later" state  (which in my use case was typically under 2 hours).   This does not explain why after resuming and then saving the activity, the activity does not sync.  Subsequent activities also do not sync until I stop and restart bluetooth on my phone.

  • In the OP you wrote you restarted the phone while being in the Resume Later mode, so perhaps that could be the reason.

Another possibility is that the phone dropped the connection to the watch, and that it is in fact not necessarily related to the pause. Unfortunately, Samsung Galaxy S2x phones are well known for its Wi-Fi interferencing with BT, and for dropping BLE connections. If you see similar cases more frequently, resetting the Network in Android settings did help some Samsung users with this kind of problems (because it reattributes the communication channels, and the frequencies of BT and Wi-Fi may get a bit farther away from each other, hence limiting the interferences). If it does not help with the disconnections, there are some other tips (also specifically for Samsung phones) in the Sync / Connection Troubleshooting Guide.

  • Actually it meas, they are not recorded at all while in "resume later":

"features such as Sleep, Stress, Body Battery, and other daily wellness tracking features are paused"
