Which glances depend on bluetooth?

Guys,

Can you please tell me which glances depend on bluetooth connectivity (i.e. require an external paired phone)?

I'm trying to find a replacement for Casio former Pathfinder (now Protrek) because barometer on my watch died and new Casio models don't have Moon phases nor tide info.

I totally understand that Garmin might be an overhead for me but so far Instinct 2X was the closest replacement in terms of supported info.

The only open question is if the features I care about need bluetooth. If they do I would probably have to suck it up and stay w/Casio (losing Moon/tide).

Thanks.

  • Hello

Tide information can be added to the instinct 2 series watch. But this will require a Bluetooth phone connection.

Moonphase and Sunrise information is available on the watch, and should not require a Bluetooth phone connection.

  • What   wrote, is correct - you indeed need the BT connection to load the data for your current location and date. I just want to add, that you can then call the Tides app even without BT, as long as the watch already has the relevant data (I just re-tested it, to be sure it did not change).

  • so... it won't be a single time data load then?
like there's no calculation of the tide info (like based on Moon phase+time zone or something)?

is there a way to create some custom glance to do that kind of calculation (even if it's a rough one)?

  • hm... okay...
what about other glances? are all of them (except for tide info) already available on the watch?

It would not really be much helpful, because the calculation based on Moon position is rather inaccurate. The true tides come often at significantly different times (with a lag of up to several hour or even an entire day), dictated by local geography. Read the details in the document Are tides higher when the moon is directly overhead? (noaa.gov)

For that reason, real-time data from local providers in similar way as weather data, is used for the tides prediction.

I guess that that might be also the reason why Casio ceased the suport of tides previsions, that you mentioned.

Tides, as well as Moon Phases, and Sunrise/Sunset are indeed on Instinct 2

  • Tides, as well as Moon Phases, and Sunrise/Sunset are indeed on Instinct 2

    1. This leaves me confused since above it was said that tide info must be loaded to the watch from an external device (via an app?)

    2. I don't really care about 1mm precision of the tide level calculation (and I did see some math online to calculate the tides even w/o Moon phase info). my question was more about a possibility to develop a widget/glance/whatever to be installed on the watch which would not require external data connection.

    3. unfortunately, I'm still unclear about other glances. there are bout 40 of them. and i would actually like to know (maybe from the customer support) which are completely device-local and which do need external data.

Any glances that would require the Bluetooth data or phone location:

    • Notifications, calendar and weather will only populate with the phone paired
    • Tide data will require the phone connection to work consistently.
    • Music Controls will only be used, if you have a paired smart phone and wish to control your music player
    • Dog tracking, InReach Controls, Virb Remote, and Xero widgets would only be used, if you owned the appropriate Garmin device and paired with the watch.

The other widgets will still work using the watch itself.  You will still need access to the ability to sync your watch with a computer. This allows the watch to keep the latest Software versions, sync activity data, update watch GPS location data, and to use features like workouts and training plans.

  • Oh, good. Thanks. This settles the case. Slight smile

Looks like I can't close this thread. But if you can ask a forum admin this thread can be closed. I'm all set.

No, all those glance are on the watch. You need Bluetooth to load the Tides prediction data (not the glance), and you do not need BT at all for the Moon and Sun data and glances. I do not see anywhere in previous posts that someone would claim something else.

    2. I don't really care about 1mm precision of the tide level calculation

If you read the document by NOAA.gov, you can see that the difference between calculated and true tides may be several hours up to a full day. So we do not speak about millimeters, but about the potential risk that such calculation could expose you to a fatal danger.
