New Instinct 2 not updating and no apps can be installed

Hello, I bought an Instinct 2 this week.

I am using it since Tuesday evening and now (Wednesday evening or Thursday morning) also connected the watch to my smartphone (via the Garmin Connect App).

I tried to also install some Apps with the Garmin QI app but the app says that I have to update the watch first.

Unfortunately the watch and even the Garmin Connect app say that there is no software update available. The software version is at 5.21 right now, which seems to be pretty outdated. Toggling auto-update in the watch settings or the app(s) settings doesn't help. Also putting the watch to the power cable (so it's not "in-use") didn't trigger an update. I double checked that the Garmin Connect app is allowed to work in the background on my smartphone and is not blocked by power-saving options or similar.

What I noticed is the low space that the IQ app is listing as free on my device: Only 512KB free or 32 apps (0 installed at the moment). Is this the regular space available on the watch when it's new?

Why is the Garmin Connect app lying about the software version to be the most recent one? How can I force an update? As I am a Linux user, I have no access to the Windows-application "Garmin Express", which I hope will not be necessary to be able to use the Instinct 2. (That would result in a refund of the then not-usable watch)

Is there maybe a manual way (e.g. by downloading a patch file and putting it onto the internal storage via a USB connection) to force an update? If so, where to download the latest version manually?

  • ask support, maybe they can help upgrading. some people here had similar issues and got helped. no chance to use somebody else's pc for garmin express?

  • I probably would have the chance - but I don't want to. I don't want to use other people's devices to use a key feature (software updates) of a smartwatch. If this is required, the watch is simply broken (by design). In the worst case, I will refund it and look for another brand. But I hope, that this will not be the case. So yes, I will probably wait for another night (I enabled the beta-program on the webpage now, maybe this helps), contact the support and then decide what to do. At the moment (even with the beta program enabled) the watch, the app and the webpage still say that 5.21 is the most recent version. :-/

That's just the space reserved for CIQ apps. You can see the total free space in a file manager, when you connect the watch to a computer.

If so, where to download the latest version manually?

Check out the Announcement section of the Beta Program forum for Instinct 2. Side-load firmware packages are published there.

  • Ah... I only checked the first few entries there but none of them had a downloadable firmware (besides the secure config which also didn't appear at the watch).

I now tried the latest sideload version (16.02) and it directly asked to install it.

    Thank you so much!
