I take the watch off everyday while I go to shower. I wash the watch with mild soap and nailbrush. Especially the back and the strap. Dry with towel and back on. Haven't had a problem since.

Also note that you can wear the watch pretty loose at night: it doesn't significantly affect the accuracy of the heart rate sensor, and it allows your skin to breathe.
Just wear your watch as per Garmin instructions, it should be tight but a bit loose so you can move it in your arm. No problem.
