Instinct 2X won't show HR after a reboot for 2-3 minutes

Greetings,

My 9 months old Instinct 2X seem to have developed an issue: it takes about 2-3 minutes after a reboot for the HR reading to appear on screen. Until that it only shows "--" on the OEM watch faces. I remember it used to take only a few seconds to get the first HR reading on this watch (similarly to the other Garmins i've had recently).

What might be the reason for this long delay? Is this a HW or SW error?

Note:

- Watch has the latest available firmware, also tried soft and hard reset, playing with settings, wearing it on the other wrist, etc.

- The HR sensor does light up immediately after reboot and constantly flashes, but no HR value for 2-3 minutes.

- Compared to my Epix Pro and Apple Watch 9, the HR values also seems to be off occasionally (by as much as 10-15 bpm), but mostly it's ok - so it's hard to tell if the discrepancy is due to the older V4 sensor, or it's an actual issue, so currently my main concern is the long delay for the HR to appear after reboot.

- Interestingly, if i quickly turn on/off the low power mode after reboot, the watch starts showing the HR a few seconds later (without waiting minutes!!).

- Oh and btw the watch also turns itself ON randomly when switched OFF (i switch it off for the night or when using another watch).

  • It is not an error, rather just a power saving feature, where in order to save the power, the watchface does not refresh every second, unless it detects the wrist gesture. So to get the HR value quicker, use the gesture, or go to the HR widget.

  • I'm not sure this is the correct explanation. I mean right after reboot, the watch face does refresh every second (it updates the seconds of time), it only goes into power saving after ~30 seconds (where it hides the seconds). Also i can use the gesture as many times as i want, the watch still won't show the HR for about 2-3 minutes. However you're correct about going into HR widget triggers an immediate HR reading (i've noticed that myself as well), which is odd.

Also i'm pretty sure that the watch did read HR after a few seconds when i've bought it, so did all my Garmins from the past 5 years (245M, 255M, 265, Fenix 7, 965, Epix 2, Epix Pro). Btw, i've once seen similar behaviour with my FR245M after 2.5 years of use, the HR sensor became unreliable and it also only showed the first HR reading after minutes when rebooted.

Basically i'd simply like to just get this confirmed by someone who has a correctly working Instinct 2X that how many seconds it take for the first HR reading to appear after a reboot.

I am able to reproduce this on my I2X. It takes around 2 minutes for the HR reading to be visible after the watch face comes on after a power cycle. If I toggle the Battery Saver from the CTRL menu before that, the reading appears immediately.

  • Appreciate for confirming this! Btw, i've also noticed that it's enough to just press GPS then SET after reboot and the HR reading quickly appears. I've also verified during a long cycling session that the HR readings are correct by comparing to an Apple Watch 9. I'm relieved that my watch works OK after all, i'm just kinda confused, as this seems to be a 'normal' thing then, yet somehow i remember it was different before. (Also none of my other Garmins waited 2 mins for first HR readings. Epix Pro shows it from the first second it boots.)
