Garmin Connect records activities twice.

Hi,

The situation is as follows:

Garmin Instinct 2 Tactical ver. 15.02
Garmin Connect ver. 4.77

HRM-Pro Plus ver. 8.90

I noticed that in a particular situation that I will write about next - Garmin Connect records activities twice. I tested during both cycling and walking activities.

For once after an activity, before final confirming its completion (just after saving in GC) - you should select "download heart rate" (second choice from the end) in the data of the activity. Then after confirming the final activity - Garmin Connect saves the activity twice. Interestingly - in the watch there is still one activity (correctly), while in GC it is double. The double activity is included in the counting of statistics (distances, training status, load, etc.).

I think this is a software bug, occurring only in a specific case. It is also possible that this is related to the use of an external HRM heart rate sensor.

  • Strange, I do not have any such option in the pause activity menu. The second choice from the bottom is Recovery HR, and Download Heart Rate is nowhere. Regardless whether I wear my HRM-Pro or not.

Are you sure you have Instinct 2? The latest public firmware version for Instinct 2 is v14.12, and the most current beta version is 15.06. Version 15.12 does not exist for Instinct 2. I believe the Descent watches have this option (including Descent G1 which looks like a fat Instinct 2).

BTW, why do you use the function Download HR? Normally it is not needed. Either the strap is connected to the watch during the activity, and then the data is transmitted from the strap to the watch continuously in real-time, or the watch is not connected (submerged in water or too far), and then the HR data is being transmitted to the watch during the saving without having to do anything. Only when you no more wear the strap during saving, you are first prompt whether you wan to save the activity without the external HR data.

  • Hi,

    Sorry, my Instinct2 is ver.15.02 (5f05380). I had beta but I quicked.

Download heart rate is after you press save (activity) and before next step (done or some other  I do have Polish language). And after save you find second from bottom download heart rate.

I tried without HRM and it failed to download heart rate (obviously), so my double save issue is only with external HRM.

I know there is no need in downloading HR but being heavy user I try many options watch provides :-)

  • Download heart rate is after you press save (activity) and before next step (done or some other  I do have Polish language). And after save you find second from bottom download heart rate.

As I wrote, I have nothing like that on my Instinct 2 with firmware v15.06 (and never saw it earlier either). The second item from the bottom is "Recovery HR", which just measures the recovery heart rate after 2 minutes of rest. Could you try changing the language on the watch to English, to see, whether it is not just a bad translation, in Polish?

  • Sure (changed to English)

    So from the beggining:

    1. start activity,

    2. workout

    3. stop activity

    4. Save (second from top)

    5. after saving you have some options to choose, second from bottom is Download HR (last one is delete), press it

    6. Searching for stored HR Data - if you have HRM on it downloads HR and saves activity to Garmin Connect twice

in the evening at home I can try once again with HRM on (now I dont have it with me) if you want to, also with pictures of every step

  • OK, I see. Yes indeed, I have it too in the post-save menu. I got confused, because originally you wrote:

just after stoped, preceding saving in GC

So I was expecting it in the pre-save activity pause menu instead.

Well, since you use the Beta version, I recommend submitting a bug report on the GI2 Beta v15 Bug Reports Forum - it is the best way to get it reviewed by the developers (unlike here on the public forum, where they do not hang out).

  • It's not a bug. It's what happens if you elect to download HR data for an activity has already been saved. Download HR should only be used for activities where the strap and the watch are separated and when swimming and even then you’ll usually see messages about searching for HR data . Otherwise, don't elect to Download HR after an activity has been saved.

  • Thanks for clarification

    Makes sense.

  • I have a Forerunner 935, and I just recently bought a HRM chest strap.  I have been getting double counting of my runs,  I assumed I had to "Download HR" to get the more accurate chest HRM data and not the wrist monitor data.  It makes sense that the watch would be collecting the chest HRM if connected through the run, however, when I do download the Chest HRM data it does change some of my stats slightly, like times in zones, and the split of Anaerobic/Areobic., which suggests to me that the Chest HRM data is not recorded by the watch until downloaded.
